Dylan covers 1: top 100 Dylan cover songs by Moondance

This chart reveals/uncovers the incredibly rich and diverse realm of Bob Dylan cover songs. One estimate puts the number of Dylan cover songs to be over 105,000; however my own research suggests that the number of verified, publicly available number of Dylan cover songs is closer to 10,000! In any event, to make a chart of my top 100 Dylan cover songs is both hard & easy.
To fully acknowledge and represent this diversity and to cover Dylan's entire 60 year recording career, I set certain parameters:
* Limit any artist to only one cover song;
* Limit any Dylan tribute album to only one cover song ~ Note: the number/diversity of Dylan tribute albums discovered during the making of this chart has amazed me. Despite having listened to over 50 tribute album, including the 30 tribute albums listed in this chart, I have only scratched the surface {elsewhere on the BEA site I am aware of a user who has a 'top 100 chart of 100% Dylan cover albums'; and during my research, I stumbled across a website that listed over 400 albums comprising between 50% - 100% Dylan cover songs};
* For Dylan albums with only a small number of original songs (eg 'Bob Dylan'; 'Greatest Hits Vol II'; 'Self Portrait'; 'Masterpieces'; 'Knocked Out Loaded' etc), this chart includes at least one cover song to showcase those albums;
* For each of the 27 Dylan albums that contain all or mostly original songs, this chart includes between two - four cover songs with the exception of 'Under The Red Sky' ~ for which finding quality cover songs proved a challenge and thus only one cover song is included in this chart;
* In other words, every Dylan album that includes, in part or in full, original songs is referenced in this chart (at last count, that added up to 40 Dylan albums);
* Some songs written/co-written by Dylan but never recorded by Dylan have been included in this chart (eg Clapton, Goffin, O'Keefe);
* Dylan side projects (eg Traveling Wilbury's, movie soundtracks) have also been included in this chart, to give this chart the most comprehensive feel that I could put together.
The order of the chart listing will be chronological - based on the release date of the corresponding contemporaneous studio album or the recording date for those songs that were released much later on compilation albums (Greatest Hits VolII, Masterpieces), the 1975 Basement Tapes or the various Bootleg Series albums.
The only exception to the chronological order is the #1 entry by Linda Mason, which is recognised as the first album to be released that was 100% dedicated to covering the songs of Bob Dylan.
The data in this chart - eg number of times Dylan has performed a particular song in concert is as at June 2023.

Song To Woody: At side 2, track 2 on this 10 track album of songs written by a variety of contemporaneous songwriters (eg Cash, Nix, Messina), Earl does a fine rendition of one of Dylan's earliest compositions, 'Song To Woody'. On this track, Johnny Cash plays acoustic guitar & Ramblin' Jack Elliott does additional vocals .
Dylan recorded "Song To Woody" on 20 November 1961 and it was released (side 2, track 5) on his debut March 1962 'Bob Dylan' album. Of the 13 songs on the album, only 2 were original songs - the other original song being "Talking New York".
Dylan has performed 'Song For Woody' on over 50 occasions ~ the first, at the Gaslight Cafe, NY on 6 September 1961; and the last time at Telewest Arena, Newcastle, England on 8 May 2002.
Despite its early genesis, the 20 year old Dylan's genius pokes up its head with a line reflecting on the state of the world (that is perhaps more true now than it was 60 years ago): "It looks like it's a-dyin' an' it's hardly been born".

Tomorrow Is A Long Time: On side 1, track 4 of his 3rd solo studio album ~ the iconic 'Every Picture Tells A Story' ~ Rod gives a delicate and thoughtful interpretation of Dylan's 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' - with a gentle touch of violin in the background. The album was an international success ~ reaching #1 in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and elsewhere.
There is a home recording of Dylan singing 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' at the Minneapolis home of Dave Whittaker from August 1962, but the publicly available 'live' recording took place on 12 April 1963 at Dylan's first public concert (Town Hall, NY). This 'live' version was released on Dylan's November 1971 'Greatest Hits Vol II' double album at side 4, track 3. In fact, tracks 3-7 on side 4 were all previously unreleased songs - which remains an interesting Dylan trademarks for 'greatest hits/compilation albums'.
Dylan did a studio recording of 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' for the Witmark & Sons Demos in December 1962, however this version was not released until the October 2010 'Bootleg Series Vol 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-64'.
Dylan has performed 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' less than 60 times in concert ~ 4 times in 1962/3 and the balance between 20 February 1978 (Nippon Budokan, Tokyo) and 21 November 2009 (United Palace Theatre, New York).

A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall: Roxy Music founder & frontman Bryan Ferry, released a solo debut album 'These Foolish Things', covering 13 songs from a broad range of artists and musical genres. The opening track is a stunning re-working of Dylan's "A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall' and along the way had commercial success with the song ~ releasing it as a single, reaching #10 in the UK & #23 in Australia & New Zealand. Bryan revisited his interest in Dylan songs in 2007 with an 11 track tribute album titled 'Dylanesque'.
Dylan recorded 'A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall' on 6 December 1962 and it was released (side 1, track 6) on his May 1963 "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan".
The first known performances by Dylan of 'A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall' can be traced to Carnegie Hall, NY on 22 September 1962 as part of a '3 song per performer all star hootenanny'. The song has subsequently been performed by Dylan around 450 times, including 'The Concert for Bangla Desh' at Madison Square Gardens, NY on 1 August 1971 ~ placing it as one of the top 40 songs Dylan has performed in his 60 year/3800+ concerts career. The last performance on the song was at the Firefly Music Festival, Dover, DE on 17 June 2017.
Patti Smith sang 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' at Dylan's 2016 Nobel Prize Award ceremony on 10 December 2016.
So many stark & vivid images in this one song, and so I will simply settle on this one: 'I heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley'.

Percy's Song: Arlo Guthrie, son of legendary Woody Guthrie, has released almost 20 studio albums over a career spanning 1967 - 2009. On his 3rd studio album, 'Washington County' (which peaked at #33 in the US & #28 in Australia), Arlo performs 10 songs, mostly original, (although the album is best remembered for his commercially successful remake of the southern gospel 'Down to the Valley to Pray'), and at side 1, track 4, Arlo does a sensitive cover of Dylan's largely unknown 'Percy's Song'.
Dylan recorded 'Percy's Song' on 23 October 1963 as part of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" sessions but it was not included in the official release of the album. It was not until 22 years later on the November 1985 "Biograph" 5 album boxset that the song was officially released (refer album 1, side 2, track 5).
Dylan took a liking to 'Percy's Song', for a very brief moment, when he included it in his live performance concert at Carnegie Hall (3 days after the studio recording) on 26 October 1963). This live version was subsequently included in an unreleased 9 track "Bob Dylan In Concert" album, which later circulated as an unauthorised bootleg with the title "Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been". The only other known Dylan performance of 'Percy's Song' is at the Lisner Auditorium, Washington, DC on 14 December 1963.
"And the only tune my guitar could play was, 'Oh the Cruel Rain and the Wind'".

My Back Pages: The Nice were an English progressive rock band, comprising Keith Emerson, Lee Jackson & Brian Davison. They released three studio albums between 1968-69. In April 1971, after the band had disbanded, they released their final 'official' album ~ comprising 4 'live' tracks previously recorded between 19-20 December 1969, including (side 1, track 2) a superb 9 minute, organ inspired, version of Dylan's 'My Back Pages'.
As a side note: By April 1970, Emerson had joined forces with Lake & Palmer to continue his musical legacy.
Dylan recorded 'My Back Pages' on 9 June 1964 and it was released (side 2, track 2) on his August 1964 'Another Side Of Bob Dylan' album.
Interestingly, 'My Back Pages' was used (in instrumental only form or with vocals by the backing singers - Dennis, Harris & Springs) to open Dylan concerts performed between July - December 1978 (replacing instrumental openings of 'A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall'). It wasn't until 11 June 1988 (some 24 years after being released) that Dylan sang 'My Back Pages' in concert settings on a regular basis ~ for the first time at Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA. The song has been performed by Dylan close to 200 times since, with the last performance being at the Alumni Field House, Oneonta, NY on 19 November 2008. At the '30th Anniversary Concert Celebration at Madison Square Gardens on 16 October 1992, 'My Back Pages' was performed (using the arrangement popularised by The Byrds) by Dylan, McGuinn, Petty, Young, Clapton & Harrison ~ with each 'legend' taking lead vocals alternatively on the six verses.
'Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now'

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue: Graham Bonnet is an English rock singer with some 30 solo/band albums to his credit, released between 1970 - 2022. On his debut solo album, Bonnet opens up with a powerful interpretation of Dylan's 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue'. The single of the song made an impact on the Australian & New Zealand charts in 1977, peaking at #3.
Dylan recorded 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue on 15 January 1965 and it was released (side 2, track 4) on his March 1965 "Bringing It All Back Home" album.
The first known performance by Dylan of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is on the Les Crane show, broadcast live on WABC TV on 17 February 1965. Following the release of 'Bringing It All Back Home', Dylan performed the song, always as the last song in the concert (as if to make a point about the transition from acoustic folk to electric rock) ~ beginning with the Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica on 27 March 1965 until he retreated into Woodstock around mid 1966. The final performance of the song was on 23 October 2019 at Stephens Auditorium, Ames, IA.
Dylan has performed 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' over 570 times ~ making it the 29th most performed song in concert.

This Wheel's On Fire: Flake (an Australian pop rock group of the late 60's-early 70's) do a credible version of "This Wheel's On Fire" (side 1, track 5 of the album) ~ the single reached #20 on the Australian charts and stayed in the top 60 chart for an amazing 22 weeks. The Hollies cover of "This Wheel's On Fire" was one of several fine versions and included on their 1969 Dylan dedication album ~ 'Hollies Sing Dylan'.
Dylan recorded 'This Wheel's On Fire' (co-written with Rick Danko) in The Band's Big Pink basement, in Woodstock NY, between April - October 1967, but not officially released (side 4, track 6) until his June 1975 'The Basement Tapes' as well as the March 1978 'Masterpieces' albums. The Band's version of the song appeared on their July 1968 album , "Music From Big Pink".
Dylan has performed 'This Wheel's On Fire' over 125 times; for the first time (with The Band) on 14 January 1974 at Boston Garden, Boston, MA; and for the final time on 22 July 2012 at La Prairie de Kerampuilh, Carhaix-Plouguer, France.

If Not For You: George Harrison needs no introduction ~ a member of The Beatles '61-'70), a solo career ('68 - '87), organiser of The Concert For Bangladesh (1970), a member of The Traveling Wilburys ('88-'90), and a lifelong friend of Dylan. Sadly George died in November 2001, aged 58.
On side 2, track 2 of this influential 1970's triple album 'All Things Must Pass', George offers his interpretation of Dylan's 'If Not For You'. As a side note, the album opens with "I'd Have You Anytime' - a song co-written by Harrison & Dylan.
Another side note (especially for Australians) is to recognised the Harrison-inspired version of 'If Not For You' by Olivia Newton-John - a song that largely launched her international career and reaching #7 in the UK, #1 in the US (Easy Listening Chart) and #14 in Australia. Olivia recently passes (August 2022, aged 73).
Dylan recorded 'If Not For You' in mid 1970 and it was released, as the opening track, on the October 1970 'New Morning' ~ his 11th studio album, which peaked at #1 in the UK & #7 in the US.
Dylan has performed 'If Not For You' in concert on 90 occasions, although the first performance did not take place until 14 April 1992 at State Theatre, Sydney, Australia (some 22 years after it was released). The final performance of the song was at Ryan Center, Kingston, RI on 17 November 2004.
As another side note: Olivia Newton-John performed 'If Not For You' on 80 occasions (second only to Dylan) and George Harrison has only performed the song 'live' once - at Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Gardens on 16 October 1992 ~ although that performance was not included in the subsequent 'live' album ~ with George's version of 'Absolutely Sweet Marie' being preferred.

Father Of Night: Manfred Mann's Earth Band are an English progressive rock/jazz infused band that has released 17 studio albums between 1972 - 2004. They open their 4th studio album 'Solar Fire' with an epic 9m 55s reworking of Dylan's 'Father Of Night' ~ a song that is Dylan's shortest studio recording, clocking in at a very modest 1m 27s.
Dylan recorded 'Father Of Night' in February/March 1970 and it was released (side 2, track 6) on his October 1970's 'New Morning' album.
Like a number of songs from this period, Dylan has never performed the song 'live' in concert.
As an aside: 'The Man In Me' was featured in several scenes of the Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski.

When I Paint My Masterpiece: No "Dylan covers chart" would be complete without a contribution from 'The Band' ~ they played a critical, supportive part in Dylan's initial foray into performing with an 'electric' set (August 1965 - May 1966) and then during Dylan's reclusive period at Woodstock, which (over the period April - October 1967 at The Band's 'Big Pink' home) produced the songs that were eventually released on 'The Basement Tapes'.
On The Band's fourth studio album 'Cahoots', they permit one song not written by Robbie Robertson to be included ~ and so, on side 1, track 2 there is the first official release of 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' ~ a song that The Band would also play at Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert some 21 years later.
Dylan recorded his own version of 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' in mid-March 1971 and it was released at side 4 track 4 on his November 1971 'Greatest Hits Vol 2' double album - some 2 months after The Band's cover version had been released.
Dylan's first performance of 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' was at the War Memorial Auditorium, Plymouth MA on 30 October 1975 ~ the performance was recorded and became the opening track on the movie "Renaldo & Clara" ~ released on 25 January 1978; directed by Dylan; filmed during the Rolling Thunder Review 1975. The song was subsequently performed infrequently until a major revival beginning in 2018 ~ where, over a 5 year period, it has been performed over 248 times (of the 338 total career performances) including on the current 2021-2023 worldwide 'Rough & Rowdy' tour ~ culminating in its latest performance at Nagoya, Japan on 20 April 2023.
'When I Paint My Masterpiece' seems like a most fitting song for Dylan to include on what may well be Dylan's last worldwide tour - he is 81 afterall & as George Harrison once wrote - 'All Things Must Pass'.
