1975-SWAN SONG
Produced By JIMMY PAGE

1. Custard Pie
2. The Rover
3. In My Time Of Dying
4. Houses Of The Holy
5. Trampled Under Foot
6. Kashmir

1. In The Light
2. Bron-Yr-Aur
3. Down By The Seaside
4. Ten Years Gone
5. Night Flight
6. The Wanton Song
7. Boogie With Stu
8. Black Country Woman
9. Sick Again

Physical Graffiti is the 6th album from Led Zeppelin. And despite being loaded with outtakes from previous albums, it's almost the band's best work. This two disc set consists of 8 new songs that came out just too long for a single disc, so they went back and pulled 7 outtakes from Led Zeppelin III, IV, and Houses Of The Holy. The result is a sprawling, and sometimes stunning, piece of work. The original songs are longer: "In My Time Of Dying", "In The Light", and maybe their best song ever, "Kashmir", clock in at over 27 minutes. These 8 tracks are all excellent, and had they been released alone, this might have been Zep's masterpiece.

The outtakes are almost as good, a testament of how strong this band was at the time. "Bron-Yr-Aur" was intended for Led Zeppelin III, "Night Flight, "Down By The Seaside" and "Boogie With Stu" for Led Zeppelin IV, and "The Rover", "Black Country Woman", and "Houses Of The Holy" were from the Houses of The Holy sessions. In all, this is a must have Zeppelin album. Hard to believe that they could have made it even better by making it shorter.

1993--GEFFEN
Produced By STEVE ALBINI

1. Serve The Servants
2. Scentless Apprentice
3. Heart Shaped Box
4. Rape Me
5. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle
6. Dumb
7. Very Ape
8. Milk It
9. Pennyroyal Tea
10. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
11. tourette's
12. All Apologies

Nirvana's follow up to the monstrous Nevermind was also their last studio album. Listening to this, it's easy to see that Kurt Cobain was prepared to take his music into a wholly new direction. There are terrific songs..."Heart Shaped Box", "Serve The Servants", and "All Apologies"...but there is also a lot of very loud noise. In Utero almost qualifies as a metal abum. It's VERY loud, and there is a ton of raw emotion and fury. It would have been interesting to see what the band would have followed this with, but we'll never know. But for those who doubt Cobain, you have to hear this. He wasn't looking to be the next Elvis. He was simply dying.

"Frances Farmer" is another great song, and "Rape Me" is furious. This isn't as strong as Nevermind, but it's still a must for any Nirvana fan. It can be difficult, but it's very good.

Rachael Yamagata is a 4th generation Japanese American. She sang with a band called Bumpus for a number of years, then released a solo EP. Happenstance is her debut album, one that got her a lot of work. And for good reason. Yamagata is shown here to be a fine singer with a powerful and emotive voice. The fact that she used John Mayer's producer can be forgiven, as the result is a fine debut.

At first, it seems like just another girl with a piano. But songs like "1963", "Worn Me Down", "Be Be Your Love" and "Quiet" show that she has what it takes. Yamagata is a strong singer, player, and writer, and this debut shows a lot of promise for the future. And it did serve her well. The album got her plenty of work. She's performed on several TV show, as well as singing on albums by Ray LaMontagne, Rhett Miller, and Ryan Adams.

1966-COLUMBIA

1. Rainy Day Womer #12 & 35
2. Pledging My Time
3. Visions of Johanna
4. One of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later)
5. I Want You
6. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again

14. Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands

In 1966, while The Beatles were just getting around to recording Revolver, Bob Dylan was already at his creative peak...for the first time. Blonde On Blonde was a new high for Dylan, and also the end of an era. Continuing where Highway 61 Revisited had left off, the album stays in the electric blues vein, but with a lot more of an eclectic sound. "Just Like A Woman" is a classic, and the album also boasted hits in "I Want You" and the questionable "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35". This is a stunning and beautiful album...who knows where he would have gone from here?

After the release of Blonde On Blonde, Dylan was in a motorcycle accident that led to his holing up in New York with The Band and recording The Basement Tapes. Blonde On Blonde is also the first significant double album in rock. It's a true classic, one of the greatest albums ever made. An easy one to rate.

1969-FANTASY
Produced By JOHN FOGERTY

1. Born On The Bayou
2. Bootleg
3. Graveyard Train
4. Good Golly Miss Molly
5. Penthouse Pauper
6. Proud Mary
7. Keep On Chooglin'

Hard to believe that in 1969, the four members of Creedence Clearwater Revival had been playing together for 10 years. Bayou Country is their second album, and the first of an incredible run of 3 in the same year and 5 albums between 1969-70. The band was basically over by 1971...but what a run they had.

Bayou Country is the home to "Proud Mary", a huge hit for the band, as well as one of their better songs, "Born On The Bayou". It also features 2 tracks over 7 minutes in length, "Graveyard Train", and maybe the best one chord song ever recorded, "Keep On Chooglin". The album shows considerable growth from the previous year's debut, and sparks of what was to come with their next four albums. Bayou Country is an important part of the CCR catalog, and a great example of why this band was so big...if only for a short period of time.

1989-RELATIVITY
Produced By JOE SATRIANI & JOHN CUNIBERTI

1. Flying In A Blue Dream
2. The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing
3. Can't Slow Down
4. Headless
5. Strange
6. I Believe
7. One Big Rush
8. Big Bad Moon
9. The Feeling
10. The Phone Call
11. Day At The Beach (New Rays From An Ancient Sun)
12. Back To Shalla-Bal
13. Ride
14. The Forgotten (Part One)
15. The Forgotten (Part Two)
16. The Bells Of Lal (Part One)
17. The Bells Of Lal (Part Two)
18. Into The Light

The third album from guitar pyrotechnic guru Joe Satriani is a bit different: it's not ALL six string wanking. Satriani also plays banjo, bass, and harmonica. And on 6 of the songs, he also sings. At last, you think...the "Eddie Van Halen Is God" guitar gang finally shows some diversity!

And then it hits...this isn't a good thing. This is Satriani showing that not only can he play your ass under the table on guitar, but he can also do other stuff as well. Dammit. Will this guy ever show a weakness? Well, he really does...guy is one of the most average singers to ever appear on a major release. But his guitar playing is still exceptional. Even if you don't like the Big Squeal that Eddie and the 80's brought to life, you have to admit...Satriani was pretty much better and more tasteful than all of the others, which makes this really a good instrumental guitar album. Even though he sings. Am I rambling yet? I think so...

1992-T
Produced By BRUCE FAIRBAIRN

1. Thunderstruck
2. Shoot To Thrill
3. Back In Black
4. Who Made Who
5. Heatseeker
6. The Jack
7. Moneytalks
8. Hells Bells
9. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
10. Whole Lotta Rosie
11. You Shook Me All Night Long
12. Highway To Hell
13. T.N.T.
14. For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)

The second live album from AC/DC, and the first of the Brian Johnson era, is nowhere near as inspired as the first one, If You Want Blood You’ve Got It. Pulling songs from more recent times as well as from the Bon Scott era, the band sounds rushed and somewhat tired…going through the motions, if you will. It’s not that they sound bad (they don’t)…they just sound like they want to hurry up and get this show over with already.

If You Want Blood is a much better set, as is the later Live From Atlantic Studios and Let There Be Rock: The Movie, both from 1997. If you have to have live from this period, this one is still out there…but there are better options for live from this band. There is a video of this show (Live At Donington), as well as a 2 CD collectors edition. Skip the latter: one disc is tough enough.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.5/100, a mean average of 84.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 14.9.

A ranking of 100 better albums is very complicated.
I don't know if a ranking of 1000 better albums is meaningful. I'm not sure.
But some good choices in this chart.

you have 5 or 6 Led Zeppelin albums in first 40… I think some of them could've been in first 100… Back in Black, Sg. Pepper and Highway 69 too. But I appreciate your work, I mean best 1000 albums, great.
