1986-GEFFEN
Produced By DANIEL LANOIS & PETER GABRIEL

1. Red Rain
2. Sledgehammer
3. Don't Give Up
4. That Voice Again
5. In Your Eyes
6. Mercy Street
7. Big Time
8. We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)
9. This is The Picture (Excellent Birds)

After leaving Genesis, Peter Gabriel released four solo albums called Peter Gabriel. Not big on album titles, he called his 5th album So (to be followed by Us and Up). So is where Gabriel finally got everything right. Mixing his maturing songwriting with world beats and his strong political sense, he found his way to three memorable hits ("Sledgehammer", "Big Time", and the beautiful "In Your Eyes"). And the rest isn't bad, either. "Red Rain" is powerful. "Mercy Street" and "We Do What We're Told" are in no way filler. And lastly, he fills it out with not one but two excellent duets: with Kate Bush on "Don't Give Up" and Laurie Anderson on "This Is The Picture".

So is the high mark of Gabriel's career. Since, he has released only two albums of new songs (plus one album of covers and one that is orchestral reworkings of previously released songs). But he was on the mark here. Too bad the songs dried up so quickly.

1980-CAPITOL
Produced By JOHN LENNON, YOKO ONO & JACK DOUGLAS

1. (Just Like) Starting Over
2. Kiss Kiss Kiss
3. Cleanup Time
4. Give Me Something
5. I'm Losing You
6. I'm Moving On
7. Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)
8. Watching The Wheels
9. Yes I'm Your Angel
10. Woman
11. Beautiful Boys
12. Dear Yoko
13. Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him
14. Hard Times Are Over
15. Help Me To Help Myself
16. Walking On Thin Ice
17. Central Park Stroll (Dialogue)

Before you get all defensive and say that this was a great Lennon album and all that, let's look at the facts. This was his first album of original material since 1974's Walls & Bridges, and yet he contributed less than half of the material here. And yes, there were several big hits on the record. But, at the time of his death less than a month after its release, Double Fantasy was already being hailed as a failure. Most of the singles were released posthumously, and likely would have never seen the light of radio under different circumstances. Double Fantasy is half filled with songs written and sung by Yoko Ono, which are not up to Lennon's level. So, if you want to rate this higher for the sake of nostalgia, knock yourself out.

Double Fantasy features only 8 songs by Lennon. Some are very good: "(Just Like) Starting Over", and "Watching The Wheels" rank among his better solo songs, and earn it a higher rating. But, there's also the silly and wretched "Dear Yoko", and while his sincerity is admirable, songs like "Beautiful Boy", "Cleanup Time" and "Woman" are a bit too personal and descriptive of a rock star turned stay at home dad. And don't forget..this album is half Yoko. Don't get me wrong...John is an inspiration to me, and one of my heroes. But this album is highly overrated, mainly due to a horrible tragedy. But overrated nonetheless.

1986-MCA
Produced By EMORY GORDY JR & TONY BROWN

1. Guitar Town
2. Goodbye's All We've Got Left
3. Hillbilly Highway
4. Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough)
5. My Old Friend The Blues
6. Someday
7. Think It Over
8. Fearless Heart
9. Little Rock 'N' Roller
10. Down The Road

From the opening track of his debut album on, it was clear that Steve Earle was not going to be your typical country artist. And he's been proving that ever since. Earle has more twang than the most Southern of rock bands, and enough rock and roll to make his contemporaries in the country community cringe. Earle's songs are about real life, and his songs cut deep.

"My Old Friend The Blues" "Think It Over", "Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' tough)" and the title track are what made, and have always made him since, simply great. Guitar Town is a fine debut album, and a good starting point for a career that only got better and better.

1989-RELATIVITY
Produced By JOE SATRIANI & JOHN CUNIBERTI

1. Flying In A Blue Dream
2. The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing
3. Can't Slow Down
4. Headless
5. Strange
6. I Believe
7. One Big Rush
8. Big Bad Moon
9. The Feeling
10. The Phone Call
11. Day At The Beach (New Rays From An Ancient Sun)
12. Back To Shalla-Bal
13. Ride
14. The Forgotten (Part One)
15. The Forgotten (Part Two)
16. The Bells Of Lal (Part One)
17. The Bells Of Lal (Part Two)
18. Into The Light

The third album from guitar pyrotechnic guru Joe Satriani is a bit different: it's not ALL six string wanking. Satriani also plays banjo, bass, and harmonica. And on 6 of the songs, he also sings. At last, you think...the "Eddie Van Halen Is God" guitar gang finally shows some diversity!

And then it hits...this isn't a good thing. This is Satriani showing that not only can he play your ass under the table on guitar, but he can also do other stuff as well. Dammit. Will this guy ever show a weakness? Well, he really does...guy is one of the most average singers to ever appear on a major release. But his guitar playing is still exceptional. Even if you don't like the Big Squeal that Eddie and the 80's brought to life, you have to admit...Satriani was pretty much better and more tasteful than all of the others, which makes this really a good instrumental guitar album. Even though he sings. Am I rambling yet? I think so...

1986-RESTLESS
Produced By DANIEL R VAN PATTEN

1. Voices (In The Night)
2. It's In Your Head
3. Say It Isn't True
4. Fire In The Rain
5. In Your Dreams Tonight
6. Tearing Me Apart
7. ...So Strange
8. Bite The Hand That Feeds (Part 1)
9. I Kill Spies
10. This Is Not The End

Agent Orange was part of the late 70's California punk movement, but they had a sound that owed just as much to surf music as it did the Sex Pistols. Thus, they found their audience with the skateboarders, and made some pretty terrific and unnoticed music through the 80's. This Is The Voice is their finest albnum, a great collection of songs that, although not as edgier as their other work, is more melodic and more memorable. Without getting all poppy.

"Voices" (In The Night)" and "I Kill Spies" are just two of the highlights here. Agent Orange mixes its surf and punk sensibilities well. This is a band that never quite found the mainstream, which turned out to be a good thing for those who know about them. Check this one out...a very fine effort.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.5/100, a mean average of 84.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 14.9.

A ranking of 100 better albums is very complicated.
I don't know if a ranking of 1000 better albums is meaningful. I'm not sure.
But some good choices in this chart.

you have 5 or 6 Led Zeppelin albums in first 40… I think some of them could've been in first 100… Back in Black, Sg. Pepper and Highway 69 too. But I appreciate your work, I mean best 1000 albums, great.
