"It's the best jam session you ever had that you thought you had recorded but in fact hadn't."

That's something my friend said about Random Access Memories which I personally feel more accurately applies to this album, partly since I don't have access to +$1million dollars worth of music production resources. From start to finish it feels like you've wandered into the belly of the strangest jam sesh produced by some very funky humans, but there's also some superbly imaginative songwriting and other-worldly studio experimentation.

To me, the other albums in my top 10 are wintery or autumnal sort of affairs, all leave-less trees and cold white light piercing through clouds. Tago Mago is my summer album, a zesty, glued together work of strange, bare funk played with both fruity precision and Velvets-esque freedom. [First added to this chart: 12/01/2012]

There is something so engaging about the ever-propulsive momentum and the way the notes appear to dance delicately between each other. I was introduced to 'In a Silent Way' first, and loved it, but this feels like that album realised in grandiose, funked-out glory. Alternatively you could argue that In a Silent Way is the more cohesive, truer to jazz album of the pair and that Bitches Brew outstays it's welcome, but I don't know, I enjoy it's ridiculousness. On a knife-edge it manages to pull off it's maximalist pomposity in a way a lot of "jazz-fusion" can't. And it is so transportive, I feel like I am in that cover art. I can't find anything out there that comes anywhere near the tone of this album. Truly mind-blowing. [First added to this chart: 08/31/2017]

Essential album, for me it is the greatest piece of unfiltered introspection put to tape. Some incredible emotion and vulnerable storytelling told through simple, stunning arrangements. [First added to this chart: 12/11/2012]

Operatic jazz that sounds like a nocturnal, polluted, bustling city crumbling under its own weight. Some moments on here are very raw and remorseful, somehow angry and romantic at the same time. It's very well-produced, and doesn't shy away from a little studio experimentation like a lot of jazz might. [First added to this chart: 09/05/2017]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 3% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.6/100, a mean average of 90.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.6.
