The album wasn't supported by a tour, or any live shows at all. Automatic for the people is odd in a way, it's both cold and warm, it's melancholic with uplifting moments, it's monochrome, and yet also bursts with colour. The album kicks off with, drive, an excellent opener. Try not to breathe, is next, this song about an aging man coming to terms with the fact his life is ending, is followed probably the most joyful track on the record, the sidewinder sleeps tonite. Everybody hurts, is off course, lovely, probably the band's most famous song. A short instrumental is followed by the dark, sweetness follows. If there Is a criticism of the album, is that it starts and ends superbly, but it kind of sags in the middle. Monty got a raw deal, and, ignoreland, are ok tracks, but they're nowhere near in the class of the rest of the songs. After, star me kitten, the record ends with a brilliant trilogy of tracks. The glorious, man on the moon, is followed by the atmospheric, nightswimming, my favourite all time REM song. This excellent record climaxes with the beautiful, find the river, a perfect way to end. At this period in time, REM were, along with U2, the biggest band in the world. This album is the reason why. "Reply

Musically, for ten minutes or so, they are great, and they get your head banging. Tom Morello's use of effects is interesting to listen to and to attempt to recreate.
However, in many other ways they are massively overrated. They are creditted as this 'political band' with a 'message' however, the band name says it all. 'Rage Against the Machine', they come across as if they really have no idea what they are raging against, they fling buzz words around, the singer shout-raps his way through a stream of cliched sayings, telling the listeners to 'wake up' and 'stand up' or whatever. But you hardly listen to the lyrics and think 'good point'.
So, not bad for ten minutes, but this album really does sound like they had success with 'Killing in the Name' and pulled an albums worth of songs out of the arse of it. The 'singer' starts as engaging, but ends up just acting as noise. The basses is clearly good, so is the drummer. Tom Morello is a guitarist to be admired, but I question if anyone would give a shit about him if he didn't turn up with a double decker buses worth of effect pedals. "Reply

Damn no matter how many times I hear it it still gives me shivers.
This album is a fantastic portrayal of addiction and the workings of an addicts mind. It does a fantastic job at showing (or reminding) you what it feels like. The album's outlook is one whose life has been consumed by drugs and it shares with you the power and the consequences of that.
This is grunge as much as it is metal. It's heavy and moody, and groovy in places. I don't even know the word that describes the feeling in the title track, but it feels exactly how the lyrics say it should.
There are imperfections to be found but they stand out more only because of the length of the album. There is so much to love here it is hardly a detraction.
To those who don't like this album, I hope you never find anything in it to relate to.
Standout tracks: Dirt, Sickman, Would?"Reply

It wasn't a let down then and I must of played it 4 times on that day. 20+ years on and I still love it to bits, for me it somehow just retains that freshness. It's an absolute joy which for me they would never better. For years I've avoided putting this album top of my list, always going for something more widely respected like Pet Sounds or something. Not anymore and with amazing tracks like Summer Babe / Trigger Cut / In the Mouth a Desert through to beautiful songs like Here & Zurich is Stained and fuzzy gems like Perfume it's just brilliant. I'm standing up and claiming this to be the greatest album of all time and that feels good."Reply

He creates a sphere that exists independently of this earth. Just by reading the songtitles this is indicated with titles such as Heliosphan and Hedphelym which is non-existing words, suggesting some kind of otherworldly spirit, but these titles are juxtapositioned by actual substance, such as Actium and Delphium. In comparison to his later IDM and Techno efforts this album is way softer, but it this is still his most enchanting album. the pulsy rythm of Pulsewidth, the distorted synths of Green Calx and the soundscape of Xtal and all this only created by a synthesizer and a drum machine. This album was kind of prophetic in its sound; that in the future nothing less than a simple machine is needed to make an album.
This is one of the greatest albums of all time."Reply

they're just having fun, the gangbanging stuff isn't meant to be taken seriously - the intro to rat-tat-tat-tat: "once again, the mighty Death Row Organization commitin' maaaaaa-aass murda, and we ain't askin' for s&^% nigga, we takin' it" - lol, unless you really believe they support mass murder and thievery. it's hard not to smile while this is on. the over-the-top gangster lyrics make this the musical equivalent of some ridiculous non-stop action movie. the way Dre arrogantly lays down some seriously mediocre, vacant rhymes more slowly than I talk really cracks me up as well.
especially after listening to really smart, fast rappers with great flow, the kind you pick up on some double entendre or wordplay that you haven't noticed b4 every time you hear it, to switch to this and still be in that mindset is a riot. you have your thinking cap on for this and all you come up with is, 'see, it puts the picture in your head like this, he's clearly setting the gun aside to smack b*&^%es for talking s*&^," lol. I know I'm not making it sound all that great, but it's awesome. this is music, not poetry. you listen to Nas for the poetry, you listen to this for the beats, the atmosphere, the fun, and the personality, all of which The Chronic has in spades."Reply

Sorry, but as much as I love Kate Bush (The Sensual World is #14 on my list of favorites), Little Earthquakes is COMPLETELY original.
Obviously, in terms of lyrics, Kate's stuff focuses on simple literature, while Tori focuses on really personal issues. The former can work with a song or two, but the latter really makes Little Earthquakes "smoother", and really immerses you into her world.
As for the music itself, the music is extremely minimalistic, which makes a big difference on the experience. One of the problems I had with The Hounds of Love was how "pompous" it was. This is the exact opposite.
On a side note, "Precious Things" is the best song on this album. Look up the live version on Youtube, and you shall be amazed."Reply

And while Wish does approach the, well, highs of Disintegration at times, it's best appreciated for the ways it diverges from its predecessor. The Cure pivots away from rapturous soundscapes into what might be new wave's final hurrah. By the time Wish is released, grunge is taking over. The emphasis on space and gloss is secondary to the harsh immediacy of heavy guitars and post-Reagan-era dissolution. While The Cure may not be embracing the trends, they're still at height of their powers, producing some of the sweetest and most enthralling music of their career. There's still room for the vast textures of their previous work, but room for a bubblegum bop here and there, as well. It is, if not the culmination of their career, a well-earned victory leap. Wish is perhaps the last masterpiece album the band might ever produce, but it caps what might be the finest run of the era (give or take a The Top), one with creative versatility and staying power that continues to reward."Reply

It is difficult to not feel melancholy when listening to this record which is due to the brilliant atmosphere created and the lyrics too. Both of these are very strong and really carry the album for me. I am also very fond of the vocal performance. 24 and Medicine Bottle are possibly two of the best RHP songs ever released and they draw me back to this album time and time again. While the other 4 songs aren't up to this standard there is still a few more decent songs such as Japanese To English. This record can feel a little slow at times though and once you are passed the brilliant first half you can get sucked out of the album a couple of times. Overall, a very emotional album that is also thoroughly enjoyable to listen too. "Reply
