I don't really know what happened, can't recall any thoughts. I woke up later, but was still trapped in this thing. I couldn't get out, and it hit me that the idea of a Nick Drake album seemed danceable at that moment. I could feel my skin turning pale and my muscles weaken. My mom even saw me and asked if I was okay - she said I looked sick and seemed bummed out. After hours, I managed to switch to reggae album Heart of The Congos, and it was like stepping out of a tunnel and being overwhelmed with light This may not sound pleasant, but few albums have affected me like that. Most music just exists - it's pleasant and all, but not really worth preserving considering how akin it is to tons of other music. Some music goes beyond just sounding good, it can affect your mood and situation - make you happy, wondering, fascinated, cry, dance, sleep, vomit or whatever (affective doesn't mean a spiritual realisation or anything like that, just that it doesn't leave you indifferent). I guess it's stuff like that we are on sites like this to look for. And this album gave me one of my most interesting music experiences ever. Affective music - and I think I'm building a healthier relationship to this album"  [+]  Reply

Entire songs sound like one long catchy chorus with tongue-in-cheek lyrics, like the title track headed by the sultry neko case belting out lines like "Now this romantic duel is into the streets, / bon appetit, you've eaten me alive... " Many song..."""mass romantic" is one catchy mutha of indie pop. Entire songs sound like one long catchy chorus with tongue-in-cheek lyrics, like the title track headed by the sultry neko case belting out lines like "Now this romantic duel is into the streets, / bon appetit, you've eaten me alive... " Many songs sound like they have layers-upon-layers of separate-but-equal catchy choruses, like "the slow descent into alcoholism" following repeated catchy verse of "my, my, my, my slow descent into alcoholism / It went something like this song (x3)" with "Salvation holdout central(x3)" (with neko backing) packing it with more fire later (making alcoholism sound like a BLAST). i like dan bejar's dark sass and opening line of "jackie" ("Jackie you yourself said it best when you said: There's been a break in the continuum") and near-closing line ("What's a version of the world without the will to despise it"). But it's the upbeat numbers dat drop da bomb. "letter from an occupant" (another with layered choruses) has a lot of energy, delivered by neko, with some upbeat drums & synths with rhythm, singing "You told me I could order the moon, babe / Just as long as as I shoot what I want." and really letting go throughout ending with some low-key mangled guitar. (AC & Bejar are good'n'all, but my new p*rn highlight's always neko.) i love the ending harmonies of "to wild homes" (& its multiple choruses). More multiple choruses in "the centre for holy wars" eventually trading a chorus of "Exactly where we are, at the center for holy wars, / I hope it never comes down again." with a repeated "Hope grows greener than grass stains.". (This fun just HAS to be heard instead of read to be believed.) The only misstep is "execution day" which lacks replete catchiness of the other songs and has a "stop/start" tempo contrary to the smooth near-constant energy of the rest of mass romantic. "Good album, considered the comeback album by Oasis and it does it well. There some great tunes like Lyla and Let There Be Love that are anthemic and memorable much like past Oasis hits. The Importance of Being Idle is probably one of the best tracks Noel has ever written."  Reply

It is so full of colour and life on those first 3 tracks that you start to think that your in for a classic from Explosions In The Sky. The way they build up the music is brilliant and they allow themselves to explode only at perfect times to give us a sudden uplift of energy which feels like an adrenaline rush. It amazes me how they do it and those first 3 tracks do deserve a lot of praise for creating an atmosphere and environment that only a few other artists can compete with. They seem to lose this on the last 3 songs with the sudden explosions not really having the same impact and the instrumentation can feel a bit nullified at times. If they could maintain their consistency this record would be up amongst their best but they couldn't unfortunately. There is still moments and glimpses on these last tracks, such as the conclusion on A Poor Man's Memory and the drum work on the closing track, which are great but they are overshadowed. Overall, they have made better music but there is still a lot to love and enjoy on this record so well worth a listen. "  [+]  Reply

Alison Goldfrapp sings about joining cults in "Happiness", getting breast implants in "Clowns", and waking up in a hospital after over-dosing in "A&E", weaving tales of an unending quest for inner-peace. But she offers a glimmer of hope with the romantic closing track "Monster Love". Aesthetically, Seventh Tree is largely inspired by 1960s/70s turn-of-the-decade culture like hippie cults, nomadic caravanners, psychedelic rock, and baroque pop. The album is a brilliant precursor to the dreamy retro art pop sound that we've heard from artists like Weyes Blood, Japanese Breakfast and Lana Del Rey this decade.
