I don't typically listen to a lot of rap so i have a hard time rating it. but because this record has gotten so muc attention this week (and i wanna be one of the cool kids) i listened to a few times straight through. First the positives, i actually really liked the opening track it brought me in and made me optimistic. I also liked the cohesiveness of the album. Clearly KL is socially conscious and has an eloquent ability to comment about it. There are a few tracks that i truly enjoyed (as w/ G.K.M.C.) How ever i thought there was more filler than there should be for an album so "perfect". I also think that KL has an opportunity to elevate the art form. He stands on pedestal and bemoans the use of "nigger" and instead implores for the community to embrace the conceptual "negus". Also takes a stand against the constant themes of misogyny and substance abuse. And still the repetition of the n word and "hoe" totally disengaged me. I will still give it a few more listens, and maybe my appreciation for the album will evolve. But for now I think the public might be overreacting just a bit. Any way i just thought that i should explain my rating, and say that there were aspects that i enjoyed quite a bit. I just need clarification on the hype. "  [+]  Reply

"I wanted to hate this album, almost out of a sheer desire to bring that rating down from a 93. But, alas, 15 infectious listens later, here we are, 9.6. Probably to be in my top 10 soon. But, alas, 15 infectious listens later, here we are, 9.6. Probably to be in my top 10 soon. When "Burn the Witch" first dropped, I thought it would be a King of Limbs/Hail to the Theif-esque record- good, but compared to the rest of their discography, nothing to brag about. Then Daydreaming dropped, and the amount of anxiety that song gave me, while still being beautiful, reminded me of Kid A songs such as How to Disappear Completely or Morning Bell. This album is as close to post-rock as radiohead have dared, and I feel like that's purely because of Greenwood's gorgeous orchestrations. And I love the Nick Drake vibe given off by a couple of these tracks- particularly Desert Island Disk. Even the songs I at first wasn't crazy about, like Identikit or Ful Stop, are among the years best. For all of you avoiding this record BECAUSE of all the hype, I'm sorry, because you need to hear it."  [+]  Reply

No other album hits me harder in my feelings than this one. Frank Ocean created an album where we can get lost in his most intimate world. His distinctive songwriting, singing style, vibe, the minimal production, and tons of emotion (obviously sad, nostalgic, etc) makes Blonde a world of its own. You need to listen to it entirely to experience it all. I find it hard to describe all the things that this album provoke on me. Everytime I hear it, it just destroys me, but at the same time, makes me happy because of the amazing piece of art that Frank Ocean created. At the same time, it's a very original album in almost every way. Self Control always makes me cry and hits me hard, I always get lost in a sea of feelings with Siegfried, White Ferrari, Nikes, Godspeed or Ivy, other songs make me feel good like Pink + White, Solo, Skyline To or Futura Free and other songs are simply amazing, like Nights. This thing never ceases to amaze me. I really feel this is Frank Ocean's masterpiece and a benchmark in contemporary music. Blonde has marked me in a significant way, and im sure im not the only one feeling the same"  [+]  Reply

And if this was his final dance, then he's certainly p...""Whilst listening to Blackstar for a second time, I realised something: this is the only Bowie album to not have his face on the cover. That left me feeling that not only was this really the end, but that he was fully aware his end was coming. And if this was his final dance, then he's certainly pulled it off with the same confidence and conviction that he's always had. But, just like his passing, the album cover only helps to bring the album into context. This is the last goodbye, and it is constructed with wondrous precision, care and quality. Musically, it's diverse and most certainly new. Plenty of influences here from a broad range of genres and styles, but it's synthesised in such a way that the resultant sound feels original, crisp and interesting. It's what he's always done best. The themes in the album now, sadly, make a lot more sense. The lyrics are personal and revealing, sometimes saddening but filled with a sense that he was ready to go. It's certainly gloomy, but by no means dark, definitely enjoyable, with plenty to read into further. What's more, the overall structure and composition is fantastic. Tony Visconti has once again done an amazing job, and I thoroughly recommend you listen to all the songs on a good pair of headphones at some point. Order wise, the songs flow from one to the other without a hitch, and I'm seriously glad that "I Can't Give Everything Away" is at the end; it's a final twist in the tale, and it's brilliant. I don't want to let his death get in the way of my verdict for Blackstar, but this is without a doubt the best album since Scary Monsters, and as far as parting gifts go, this is a very good one. Even so long after he began his career, and with his death on the horizon, he managed to reinvent himself just one more time. Whatever this persona comes to be known as, it's certainly the closest we're ever going to get to the man himself. So long, Thin White Duke. And thank you."  [+]  Reply
