"Great album that shows that straight-forward rock music is still alive and kicking"  Reply

The lack of cover art speaks volumes. All the previous art for this spoke of the album's supposed content: the vast sadness of loss, a mother's absence, the hereafter, the respite of faith, etc. A black square is just that, it's simple in the worst possible way and comes out as lazy and unfinished. For an album to have this length and not be distributed in two LPs, it has to have two qualities: a unifying theme and good coherent sequencing. Donda lacks both of them, and comes out as unedited and bloated. The lack of theme is the most disappointing aspect of it. There's songs here touching the aspects of loss, faith, hope, love, redemption, etc. These are the most beautiful ones, and can be astounding (Come to Life, No Child Left Behind, Lord I Need You, Jesus Lord, Keep My Spirit Alive). Come to Life specially is poised to be one of Kanye's best ever. But some of them not only are uninteresting, but also unnecessary for the building of the theme, only diluting it and its emotional impact. The lyrics are a lot better than on JIK, and Kanye seems to have lost the childishness in which he expressed his faith on that album. In this aspect, the album's maturity is refreshing. It had a lot of potential to be one of this greatest, specially after seeing the aesthetics and sense of purpose of the last Listening Party. For me, it needs a lot of cutting down, less features, better sequencing. So, the work of an outside editor to ground and round the album. Unfortunately, as it is, it's the first bloated and tiring Kanye album."  [+]  Reply

I find something new to obsess over every new listen. Easily one of my favorite albums released this year. A previous commenter suggested this was hip hop version of Daughters' YWGWYW, and I 100% agree. Definitely my favorite hip hop album this year, could definitely make the argument for AOTY 2020 as well. Favorite tracks: Say the Name, Pain Everyday, Check the Lock"  [+]  Reply

"Another incredible record. It's amazing how Nick has been able to maintain this level of consistency so far into his career. The songs are heavier and probably more reminiscent of the earlier Bad Seeds material than the last two albums have been but the quality hasn't dipped at all"  Reply

"Perfectly in sync four piece band whose members each do more than hold their own. The fantastically uncaring vocals (and lyrics) make the album a unique experience. Really great stuff."  Reply

What results is that De Todas Las Flores is maybe Lafourcade's funnest album in a long while, while somehow also being a full embrace of orchestral backing. Classical motifs are most prominent on the opening track and closing track, but even when they occur they are transient interventions in Lafourcade's latin music. These styles are wonderfully woven together conceptually, melodically as well as through the album's sublime production work. "De todas las flores", "Maria la Curandera", and "Canta la arena" are favourites, but it's one of those albums that rewards commitment to reach its conclusion by presenting its most beautiful ideas in those final minutes, a beauty that can only be understood through that commitment."  [+]  Reply
