I recently read somebody's review on Muse's newest album. They have said it was not a good album due to them selling out. I have heard the same opinions on Linkin Park, Green Day, Coldplay, etc. Apparently selling out means making changes to something for more money and/or fans. Is that true? If it is, people need to realize that making music is also a job, you have to make money from a job. I don't think just because somebody has more fans now does not mean they have "sold out" Weather or not this is true, what do you think about selling out?
Muse's last album was not wildly different in style and I don't see them being sell outs. Someone's just pissed that they were commercially successful, which in and of itself isn't sellling out.
Selling out for a musician is when you deliberately change your sound to something more in tune with what the masses are listening to for the sole, specific purpose of making a commercially successful album. That is, rather than making new sounds the masses flock to, you make a sound like what the masses have already flocked to in hopes they accept yours as well. There's no artistry in it, there's no real creativity, you're simply following established musical formulas to get rich. Pop singers can't be said to be sell outs because they sold themselves when they decided to become pop singers. But a band noted for its creativity and relatively unique approach to music suddenly sounding like 90% of the other groups out there on a new album is a sure sign of someone selling out. _________________ <(: @ :)>
