I like The Killers' cover - not musically but conceptually. I like the idea: take a song from a loved band with many passionated (or fanatic) fans whose music is considered to be "deep" and emotional. Then completey take every emotion out of the song and instead fill the spaces with bells and whistles. If I were to cover a Joy Division song, I would also make it as superficial as possible. Because if you try to be true to the aesthetics of Joy Division, you're most likely to fail. So why not fail with a smile?
The Killers are shite and the JD Peel session was the band at their peak. I remember hearing that session on the Peel show originally at the time and it was an epiphenal moment in my life.
