I agree about artists that put their face on covers, more particularly if it's a photograph instead of a drawing. Take two albums I like, Ys and Kind of Blue. I don't mind the Ys cover, I suppose it's because it's a drawing and there's more things going on than just having Joanna in it, but Kind of Blue cover looks like crap - it's just Miles Davis playing an instrument. I suppose there's the ocasional exception, though. Ummagumma's cover is probably one of the best I've ever seen, and it's for its creativity. So I suppose that's the word. "Creativity". If it's just a picture of the artist at a certain angle it looks uninteresting and doesn't represent the music much other than that artist is in it, but if they do something creative with it it might turn out fine.

The Velvet Underground and Nico is a fucking awesome album cover.

No it's not. It is always the cover that comes to mind when people speak negatively of cover "art".

I put off listening to this so long just because the cover is so ugly. Awful mistake to make.

Just listened to some of Grimes work.
This is a terrible cover because it gives out all the wrong messages.
I was expecting a teeny grunge band, what I got was dream pop. Surely they're alienating a huge potential market with this one.

well, often an album cover reflects its music, making a cover 'great' no matter how 'shitty' it is. There's two albums that come to mind as far as album covers that don't make sense for me:

Yes, yes, yes! Not a horrible cover, but when I first saw this cover I was expecting a psychedelic album with all kinds of weird sounds going on, but instead I got this laid back album with a lonely guy singing with his guitar (and some few other instruments).. of course I didn't know who Nick Drake was!

For me the greatest discrepancy is Countdown to Ecstasy (Steely Dan). Great album, but the cover is ugly in a very major way. I agree with whoever said Pet Sounds as well, doesn't fit the brilliance on the inside at all. Goodbye (cream) has an unbelievable Side 1, and its artwork is just way to corny. I mean, after Wheels of Fire and Disraeli Gears (two of the greatest covers of all time) couldn't they do something a little bit less cringe worthy?

Also, as much as it pains me to put the Beatles here, Magical Mystery Tour looks like the title should be "12 Fun Sing-a-longs for Nursery School!" Good thing it has so many great cuts.

Maybe Strange Days by the Doors as well. I mean, did that guy really have to be in a skirt and thrusting his arm pit at you?

Blind Faith is probably my first pick. I won't post it here - I think you all know where I'm going with regard to that very questionable and tasteless cover.
