I can't think there would be more than say, 1000, civilizations in the galaxy. Unless faster-than-light travel is *somehow* possible, it's pretty unlikely we'll encounter aliens from the Milky Way any time soon, let alone extra-galactic aliens. We're probably more likely to find/be found by something post-biological (e.g. a von Neumann probe).
