This concept has recently intrigued me.

What I'm talking about is when an artist goes an "remakes" a whole album from someone they love. Here are probably the three most obvious examples of this:
*The Flaming Lips version of DSOTM
*The Dream Theater version of Master of Puppets
*Surprisingly, Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, which is a track-for-track "re-imagining" of Exile on Main Street.

With my band, I almost want to do remake of an album (maybe Abbey Road, maybe The Blue album; maybe Moving Pictures. I'm not sure). It would have to be of a "silly" album, though, because I don't want to mean it as an insult.

What do you think of this concept? Should people "remake" albums more often?

You are so right about this Smile

The reason you don't see so much of these is you have to pull them off, if you don't the reviewers will completely grill you and the phase "ran out of idea" will be thrown around like food in a food fight.

And what you said about Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville has made me want to listen to it. That's an even more interesting idea to change the album into something different

The Dirty Projector's Rise Above was a "re-imagined" version of Rise Above by Black Flag. Supposedly the singer hadn't heard the album in 15 years and kind of reinterpreted in his own slightly sissy way. It turned out pretty dreamlike - definitely an interesting listen!

Phish is known for covers of entire classic albums every Halloween. Many of which have been officially released on CD. They did the White Album, Remain in Light, Loaded, Exile on Mainstreet, Quadrophenia, and a few others. They don't really re-imagine them, but they jam some of the numbers out if you're into that.

Heard "Depression's got a hold of me..." and thought Black Flag but then realized it was some other bitches voice. Laughed so hard when I first heard the Dirty Projectors remake

Wow. I must hear this! Wasn't even aware of this album's existance. Thanks!

I remember a female artist completely re-did The Who Sell Out, but it's slipped my mind of who.

Petra Haden. It's entirely a cappella.

There's a Youtube clip of I Can See for Miles here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNFoNBz9Dbs
