I really like Self Portrait, but I couldn't give a damn whether you skip it or not. It was your choice to try and listen to a whole discography anyway.
Yeah, what he said. Personally I think that Self Portrait is better than generally considered. It's just such a shock when listing to his discography chronologically because it's the first sign that he could possibly record something that wasn't considered brilliant. If you think this one is bad you're in for some more disappointments ahead in the late 80s / early 90s.
Perfectly pleasant, but quite boring compared to previous Devendra efforts. I don't know, it may grow on me, but there's nothing immediately arresting about this. To be fair though, I haven't really been bothered by Devendra in quite a few years. I thought Cripple Crow was stunning, but the last two albums didn't do much for me at all. This seems like a re-hashing of old ideas, but with even less direction than before (not that he's ever been the most focused of artists). The production is great though. As I said, there's a fair chance it'll grow on me. 'Your Fine Petting Duck' is a really pretty.
