If you say ALL people with French accents sound sexier than other people then yeah pretty much!

It's a generalisation based on a limited sample (unless you have actually heard all people who have French as their native tongue speak English... and can compare it to all people who don't have a French accent... which I seriously doubt!)

And generalising about a whole people based on a limited sample is pretty pathetic... regardless of whether you are saying something nice or something nasty!

Everybody generalizes everything in real life. E.g. I have not listened to every rock album ever made, but I have my opinion of rock music in general (bad example, but I have nothing right now). Of course I can't speak for ALL of rock music, as well as I also can't speak for ALL french people. But it makes it easier to converse with people.
Of course it's rarely fair. But I don't think it's always offensive. Or racist.

I never said 'always'... I tend not to deal in generalisations because I think it is a bit dumb

I am also not a big fan of sweeping statements about racial stereotypes.

So statements like 'all people with a British accent sound more 'douchey' when they talk crap than anyone else in the whole world' don't facilitate conversation - they just piss me off. It's unnecessarily rude.

I don't have a problem with statements like 'The Gallagher brothers sound like utter douchebags because they talk utter shite and their accents are horrible'... *shrug*

How is it not offensive/stereotypical to say that their accents are horrible, considering it's an accent shared by thousands? And it's hardly an offensive stereotype to say that, to me, an accent tends to overstate the message it's trying to convey. It's just an objective observation regarding the British accent. It's like saying it's offensive to find one skin color more aesthetically pleasing than another, which is a completely natural opinion to have and not racist in the slightest.

Only you didn't say the Gallagher brothers have horrible accents, did you? You made a sweeping statement about everybody who speaks with a 'British' accent (whatever that means)...

So you tell me as a Brit, how I would not find a statement like 'All Brits sound even douchier than anyone else because of the way they speak' NOT rude? It's incredibly rude! You have lumped a whole 60 million people together, generalised and said their accent makes them sound like twats. Based on what? Oh yeah Liam and Noel... who are hardly representative of how the nation speaks.

Actually Swedenman also mentioned that "when British people say awesome things with their characteristic accent that makes them even more awesome" so I don't think he meant to insult an entire nation. What I think he tried to say was a subjective impression that the quality of the things people say with a British accent is often emphasized. I can't speak on his behalf though, I'm just guessing.

I understand where your argument about "stupid generalizations" comes from, although this is something everybody does sometimes during their everyday life, often without even realizing it. The first version of Swedenman's post sounded racist and unfair, but he explained himself afterwards, so I don't think an issue should be made out of it.

You pretty much got what I was getting at. I'm not making any generalization whatsoever about British people. I'm making an observation (not a negative one, by any measure, for that matter) about the accent itself, which I've heard plenty of to be able to make a general statement. I realize there are many different British accents and different degrees of all of them, and that my particular observation won't apply to literally all of them, but it applies to the majority of the ones I've heard, which is quite a lot. I'll take this moment to re-emphasize the point that the statement I made about the accent was not, and I'll explain this again if I have to, in any way an offensive or negative one. If I stated it in such a way that made it seem so, then I was misunderstood and will gladly re-elaborate if you want.

As for the original post, if it came off as racist and unfair, I apologize. I meant it as a joke. Of course, I'm not the type to be offended by jokes no matter how crude they may be, so I usually don't realize if a joke I'm making is over the line, so I'm sorry if it was. But, as useless here explained, what I actually MEANT by it wasn't really negative at all.
