I'm not knowledgable about history, or this particular mindset of music. I've heard some but not much. Like any style, most probably sucks. I do think most of these dark covers accompanied with black metal to be a cliche. Despite this, it somehow worked for me on this. Perhaps it has the right level of harshness and distortion, I don't know. I've only heard it once.

Just thought you should know. Do what you will with it. By the way, I wasn't talking about the cliched cover (although frankly, no that you come to speak of it...) but about the views the singer has expressed and what the band is known to advocate.
