We should just change the names of every member we dislike to Coward1, Coward2, Coward3 etc...

When I was a new user my main concern was that people didn't value anything I posted, because they weren't directly responding to me, but continuing using the forums I've come to realize that any thoughtfully laid out opinion is valuable to the discussions on this site. I read many posts on this site that I wouldn't have anything to say to, but if it's well written and genuinely interesting, I'd love to give them some kind of thumbs up, especially for new users, encouraging them to continue posting.
Concerns over this were that people would tailor their posts to just reap the most likes possible, and that unpopular opinions would just get bombed. If 'upvoting' a post doesn't add to anything except a number on that posts (so have it not add to site-points or a total-tally), then people won't feel obliged to farm for them, and if there's no negative vote, then people are only rewarding thoughtful discussion without going out their way to punish trolling or stupid posts; it also just keeps things generally positive.
If this system was in place when I was new to the forums, I would certainly feel assured by any 'upvoting' that I received, and post much more than I did in my early days.
It's implemented this way on many forums and works without any problems. |
lol. On another forum where I frequent, one user was threatening me that he would lower my karma if I didn't give him any.
His plan was thwarted by me not giving a fuck.

If a new user gets bombed and nobody replies, he assumes everyone agrees with the bomber. If a new user gets bombed and that post gets 15 downvotes and his original post 15 upvotes, he feels the violator is a black sheep within the community and doesn't feel attacked by the group, but just by the offender. |
The idea has potential, but how can we prevent users voting based on their opinion of the user rather than the value of the comment? I've certainly seen posts on other sites where a user may make a good valid post, yet it's still downvoted due to prejudices held against the user from people having previous disagreement with that user. To me it's a flawed system.
Edit: Just saw DLG's post, you've got yourself one classy beour there! _________________

Youtube loves to mark downvoted comments as "spam" thus silencing individuals who may (or may not) have a point that is valid. So yeah, it's a extremely easy system to manipulate and alienate.
I vote no.
