Before age 17, didn't listen to any rock (Coldplay was as close as it got). First type of music I got into at age 13 was film + game soundtracks.
My initial interest in soundscapes and mood-setting music is likely the reason I like diegetic sound in my music today, and have a fondness for ambient music.
Videogame soundtracks got me interested in electronica around age 15 (prominently Aphex Twin).
17 was the breakthrough year, where I discovered Porcupine Tree while looking for ambient music (they were tagged with it). Since they covered such a broad spectrum of genre, they became my gateway into each of these. I also started to look for more bands that covered a large spectrum of genres in their music, and hence, my progressive rock leanings.

Quite unusual eh?

I dont know what it is, But any song that I listen to on a game I cant take seriously when I listen to it on its own (radio/album) A major one being Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out. I bought NFL 2005 and that song just played over and over and just seemed like muzak rather than music, This may be a dumb flaw but I cant help it, If I hear it first on a game, thats it, I most likely will never enjoy it on its own merit
