You can tell a truth in a deceptive way, and you can say something technically untrue in a way that conveys a broader truth (eg. all works of narrative fiction). I guess the crucial point is betraying trust. That's what I try to avoid. |
I think a lie (as I understand the word) is the kind of a statement when you intentionally try to decept others for whatever reason. I don't think exaggerating while telling some stories is the same, and I would say the same for works of fiction. But I would say there's a thin line here - and is a matter of the discussion on how far can you take the "creative license" argument. We had the discussion about Argo on this forum, but there are many cases where the filmmakers seem to twist facts, not just to tell a more compelling story (or whatever), but also to decept the audience for a reason.
I personally get lying in cases where the truth will not benefit either person. And when the lie is about something that will be forgotten anyway and is just a waste to time to bother with the truth (I should think of some examples, this is confusing even me)
The lies I least understand are those elaborate lies when a person will make up entire alternate reality about something (sometimes even themselves). Not only is there work behind that, but what gain do you have of it? Feeling better about yourself.. by lying about yourself?
As for myself, I think I rarely lie, some white lies of course, and occasionally I sorta "adjust" the facts a bit while still technically telling the truth. Maybe that doesn't make sense.. I mean for example when you take responsibility for something you've done but you don't tell the full story as to why or how you have done it? If you know what I mean...

Pretty much this. The internet has become this thing when you get ridiculed for trusting people and that's kind of disgusting. Not least because convincing someone of something being true is actually not a challenge at all when it's in text (literally anyone can do it). Now I'm mostly talking about trolling here but are you talking about people lying about other stuff like themselves? I never got that either. I think it's obviously a protection thing. Like the truth obviously still hurts so they'll cover it up...or am I on the wrong train of thought here? Gimme an example!
As for myself, I definitely lie in real life for personal gain, it's just one of those things. I'm a good liar and I've always done it (again only if it gains me something). But if someone finds out you'd lied myou're porobably gonna end up with less than you had before so it can definitely be a gamble. The personal gain bit is the part I don't get about people lying on the internet - what are you getting out of it?

Trolling is definitely what I have in mind, it seems that pretty much everyone likes to do it to an extent. Other than that, and I guess it happens because I too often try to substitute the lack of communication IRL with talking to people online, I'm realizing how little people are willing to be honest about themselves, and they often just make shit up. So.. You know, I realize that a couple of times, and suddenly I don't know what or who to believe in anymore. That's what frustrates me. As does the thought that I'm being honest to somebody about myself while I know literally nothing about them.
Oh well, I know it's not exactly an "example", but I'm not sure how more particular I can be. But anyway, these days I just kinda stopped trusting whoever I talk to online, because I can't tell what's true and what isn't.
BTW I did mention this with totally random people, but I think even those that I know are less truthful over internet or other means of communication (but i guess that's logical)
