Cornell Campbell meets Soothsayers - Nothing Can Stop Us (2013)
Seeing this man live was easily one of the highlights of my summer so far, and I've been looking forward to hearing the new album. I think this year's reggae releases have been pretty poor so far - Sizzla's The Messiah was admittedly pretty great, whilst The Lions' album wasn't bad by any means, but Chezidek's album was a bit cheesy whilst the new efforts from Alborosie and Morgan Heritage respectively were far too overcooked and, at times, unlistenably bad - but this is absolutely excellent. Very rootsy, with some light dub elements. They've largely eschewed digital sounds in favour of a more traditional, organic vibe, and it really pays off. Helps that the songs are largely pretty memorable too, and when Campbell's breaks into his gorgeous soft falsetto they absolutely soar. This will probably overtake that aforementioned Sizzla record as my favourite reggae album of the year as I get more acquainted with it, and I highly recommend it to anybody with even the most casual interest in reggae.
