First listen and my sixth Scorpions album. Also my fifth live album. I'm listening to it with my mom and stepdad who both say Scorpions are fantastic live. So far, that statement is not far off.
Yes, yes it does. Now let's compare to the competing "new direction" for jazz...
My impressions: Both albums, Kind of Blue and The Shape of Jazz to Come, discover a new mountain to climb. Kind of Blue sounds like it may have already reached the summit of that mountain, whereas The Shape of Jazz to Come reveals, but does not reach, a much higher peak. The latter needs more listens, though.
A Journal of the Plague Year by Tom Rapp. Good first listen. Former Pearls Before Swine frontsman Rapp makes an unexpected comback in 99 backed by Damon & Naomi (formerly of Galaxie 500). The result is a somewhat bare folk record, with Dylan-ish harmonica accompaniment, and some sparse chamber arrangements, reminiscent of some of his earlier work in (or as) Pearls Before Swine. Damon & Naomi can be accounted, if you really want to, for some sort of dreamy (or rather, slumbering) atmosphere throughout, and an important Galaxien contribution to the "Shoebox Symphony" suite. Really nice, I'll add it to the site in my '99 chart at the end of the week so that those interested can wishlist it.
