My buddy Shilpa Ray just dropped a new EP on Nick Cave's label. I think she's actually stuck at the UK border right now trying to get in for their tour together. If you've never heard her, check her out. It's rare to find women who sing like this. She's a very small indian chick, but performs with more ferocity than just about anyone.

Her voice is good but overall she's just not my style. I consider myself to love droning organs but it's clear it became a crutch in those last three songs to fill in space and create timbre because god knows the rhythm section and guitar weren't helping the music along most of the time. That harsh part aside, her voice was good; I'm sure if I were to see her live that the hair on my cheeks would raise.

I think you might like some of my pal's songs, it you're interested. She's planning on dropping a self-released EP (tentatively titled Chest) by the end of the year and I think these will be the songs on it, in that order. My personal favorites are highlighted as "be" and "songs." Her voice reminds me a bit of Lisa Germano, or even Cat Power sometimes.

Thanks for checking it out. These is definitely Shilpa's tamest recordings. Her last record was pretty wild. I do agree with you somewhat though. Her bread and butter is performing live.

I think her song "Erotolepsy" is would give you another perspective of her capabilities, especially with a better backing band performance.

also, the track she did with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis for the Son of Rogues Gallery comp is pretty great.

Gonna check out more of your friend's tracks. Dust Pan is pretty strong. does remind me a bit of really early Cat Power.

Cat Power plays Bonnie Prince Billy edit: Palace Brothers rather. "be" reminds me of "Meaulnes" a lot. Very good indeed!

Erotolepsy was so much better than anything on her 2013 EP. Quite awesome rockin'. I'll listen to the whole of the album and edit my response back in.

EDIT: getting my morning dose of Courtney Barnett and then I'll get back on this

For those who enjoyed Oval's (free) Calidostopia! from earlier this year, he's just released a sister album titled Voa. It's available on Spotify and some songs are available on bandcamp. This release appears to mostly rehash music used on O and Calidostopia! in the background, while applying noisier stuff in the foreground, still with singers from across S. America
