A man who I've neglected up until now, I've got a lot of catching up to do... _________________ No-one writes them like they used to, so it may as well be me.
I don't think it's quite fair to say that Patsy was spearheading that movement. The record companies knew that country music was in trouble with the birth of rock & roll, and they began changing the sound and presentation of country. Patsy Cline happened to be right at the start of her career at the same time. She was pretty unsuccessful, with only one hit between 1955 and this album in 1961. Showcase had 2 big hits, and she had one more big hit before she died. I think that mostly she was a struggling artist trying to make her way, and she probably didn't have a lot of say as to how her music was produced. It WAS the late 50's to early 60's, and women weren't given a lot of artistic freedom back then.
All of those things are true, but I think I miscommunicated. Most of the success she achieved was due to the "smoothing" of her sound by outside forces. My point was not to blame her for the changes in country music -- that would be wrong -- it was more just to say that there is little to *credit* her with. I shouldn't have said "spearheaded," but she was still one of the more well known success stories.
Seeing them live was transcendental. Well maybe that isn't the word since it was so claustrophobic and bleak. Either way, that was an incredible, one of a kind experience. So, yep, I'm listening to this album right now. ๐
