Tinymixtapes called this post-absolute music, which is the most retarded genre tag I think I've ever heard. That being said I've been wanting to hear some Laurel Halo for a while so I'm sure this is as good a place as any to start.

tinymixtapes is the most pretentious music website I know of, constantly trying to attach meaning that patently isn't there to music and coming up with deliberately controversial interpretations of albums. They are the internet's biggest champion of vaporwave, and Farrah Abraham's music, and are far more likely to give a good review to some terribly produced, poorly realised sound collage than they are to something with, y'know, some semblance of conventional song structures. They think their undergrad philosophy references make them sound like they are gleaning a deeper understanding of the music that can help us put it into some important (or, at least, important sounding) wider context, when in reality they just sound like they're trying much too hard.

OK, rant over. New Laurel Halo is good.

Second listen. First listen was in the car over the weekend, and I wasn't particularly impressed (aside from "Normal Person"), but I guess it deserves a proper listen with the headphones. Still, I'm irritated that listening again means I need to sit through the not-as-effective-or-atmospheric-as-they-think-it-is hidden track nonsense. Still, trying to have an open mind this time around...

Public Image by Public Image Ltd.

Religion II is not exactly incredible, but the rest is marvelous. The opener in particular is one of the most powerful things I've ever heard. It reminds me of a punky Frankie Teardrop. I'm more motivated than ever to re-try Metal Box (not before tonight, though).

The closer is frankly annoying, too. Overall it's great, though inconsistent. Too bad, because the good is really amazing, and without the bad, this would have easily been on my chart.
