What happened to 1974?

You look at BEA's #1 albums for the years in the 1970's, you have some super-greats. Dark Side of the Moon. Zeppelin IV. Ramones. Rumours. London Calling. Many of them in the top 20 overall. In between 1973 (Dark Side of the Moon, 2nd overall) and 1975 (Wish You Were Here, 15th overall) is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, by Genesis, #248. To put that in perspective, it would not have made the top 7 in either 1973 or 1975. Was this the best that we as a collective site could come up with for 1974? I mean, the album doesn't suck, but best of the year? Really? Besides Pink Floyd not releasing anything, what happened in 1974 so that nothing super-awesome got made?

1974 remains a mystery. It is part of the golden age of rock & roll but for some reason comes nowhere near any of the other years in that period.

Still better than some of the 1990's but not a good year. Not a good year at all.

Second Helping by Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best album of 1974 by the way.
