The first 2014 album I've been able to sink my teeth into it. Lovely, shimmering, epic dreampop. Nothing revolutionary here, but it's extremely well executed and totally evocative of springtime. Nothing remotely black or metal about it though.
Shit, didn't realise it had leaked. I've just got to hear this.
Alcest have clearly completely left their black-metal roots on this; this is pure shoegaze and dream pop. If I had to choose a sound that its the most similar to, I would probably say Ride, but it often reminds me of Sigur Ros at times, which is a pretty great combo for me. Although this is clearly different to their black-metal sound (mainly shown on my favourite Alcest album, รcailles de lune), and more like Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde (which I still enjoy, but not nearly as much as รcailles de lune) it is still rather brilliant. I not sure this would overtake รcailles de lune as my favourite Alcest album in the future, but I can definitely see it being very high on my 2014 chart. Don't be at all put off by Alcest's history as a black-metal band (although, I wouldn't see why that should put you off anyway), this is clearly nothing like it, and is a great listen. And props to Alcest in changing their sound as well, they could have just stayed to the same old formula, but I like how they're are constantly changing and still always pleasing me.
EDIT- Just found out that Birgir Jรณn Birgisson (the sound engineer of Sigur Ros) produced this album. So I guess my comparison with Sigur Ros makes sense.
