In terms of R&B there are much worse places to start than TLC's CrazySexyCool, Mary J. Blige's My Life, and a Kelis greatest hits compilation succinctly titled The Hits. Also, whilst she's more frequently thrown under the neo-soul umbrella, you should probably check out everything you can by Erykah Badu. And a singer called Georgia Anne Muldrow, particularly her Madlib-produced album Seeds. And yes, Aaliyah is most definitely worth a shot. If you're willing to take a chance on male vocalists, How to Dress Well is probably my favourite of the new alternative R&B crowd, whilst it would be remiss of me not to mention classics of the genre such as Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel, Tevin Campbell's I'm Ready, R. Kelly's 12 Play series, Usher's 8701 and Justin Timberlake's Justified. Whilst not strictly R&B, I also think you'd probably enjoy Take Care by Drake. As for UK bass music, I'd obviously recommend everything from my dubstep chart, as well as more recent releases which fit under the bass music umbrella, such as Forest Swords' Engravings, Four Tet's Beautiful Rewind, Logos' Cold Mission, Keysound Recordings' compilation This Is How We Roll, Co La's Moody Coup, Wen's Signals, and Addison Groove Presents James Grieve, the last of which I think you'll find is probably the most similar to that Kelela album. Hope that helps.
Oooh, lots for me to check out, that should keep me busy for a while. Thank you! ๐
Alright good pick, this is definitely something that I might dismiss under some cirumstances, and I'll admit I didn't like it starting out, but as the whole thing progressed, their dirty pop punk sound seemed to be attached to a quality that I would almost describe as endearing. Like they're just having fun and are the counter-opposite of pretentious, and by the end I was having fun too. So, nice try, but I actually quite liked this (no matter how many stupid music critic buzzwords akin to "derivative" I might use to describe them. Really by the end I was having enough fun that I found it hard to dislike or even criticise the album if I tried. This is the kind of album that reminds me how stupid music criticism in general is.) Somewhat reminiscient of Fastbacks, (and to a lesser extent, Veruca Salt), which can be good or bad but in this case is a good thing. I had fun with this one. And not like guilty pleasure fun or stupid fun or ironic fun just plain old happy fun; I don't listen to just flat out fun music as much as I should. Thanks for throwing me something I wouldn't normally touch
I didn't love it, but by no means did I dislike it. Actually I found it quite interesting and really liked several tracks; some really cool instrumentation and changes; that said I do feel some overstayed their welcome and I just kinda sat there waiting for them to end, but I can't think of a track I straight up disliked. I'll probably give this another listen in the future. So, you failed. Thanks! ๐
EDIT: haha I'm actually listening to this one again. That second half is actually pretty great
Anyone know the best album for The Isley Brothers, comp/otherwise?
It's Our Thing is pretty stellar, though as Lethal mentioned 3+3 is probably them at their best. I also quite like Go for your Guns and Brother, Brother, Brother
