I relistened to my favourite albums for the first time in ages over the weekend and decided that this comp deserved a much higher ranking than before. All of the tracks were produced during Lee Perry's 'golden era' at his Black Ark studios in the late 70's and display one of the reggae genre's leading lights at the peak of his powers. There are a few instrumental versions included but these can be easily skipped if you're not into tripped out echo effects and the sounds of cattle being pushed to the front of the mix, but on the whole there are so many golden nuggets spread across the three discs that you won't mind too much.
Nice coincidence. This is one of those great compilations that works as the perfect entry point for anybody looking to get into Scratch's work from the period, and as a standalone album that holds up against most (if not all) of the records these songs are culled from (where they have parent records, of course). Highly recommended to, well, everybody actually.
