Situation: For your next birthday, an unusual series of political uprisings result in you being made king of your home country.

Question: What do you make the country's national anthem and why? Do any musicians get deported?

It's a real sort of dance-y track, really appropriate for Riverdance and all those jigs and reels. XD Also that riff makes me really patriotic for whatever reason.

For who I'd deport, oh you'd know who if you observed my presence here long enough. ๐Ÿ˜œ

Without wishing to take the sheen off this wonderful song, or suggest that My Bloody Valentine are anything other than an Irish group, it seems funny to me that you can get patriotic over the work of a man who spent the first decade of his life in America and then relocated to Germany and then London before he'd really recorded anything of note.

By the way, here lies a fantastic article about Darkside's set at Coachella that touches on the idea of music as eternal ritual to summon transcendence, especially in collaboration with drugs, pretty much in line with the stuff I've been reading by Simon Reynolds about rave music. It's well worth five minutes of your time (or ten, depend on how slow you read). It contains a fantastic line about psychedelia ("you can mimic an old guitar tone or wah-wah pedal, but a purely psychedelic experience is built on continual surprise") and more brilliant ideas cast out as throwaway thoughts than most music writers manage in a year.

It's funny how so many people regard them as Irish, same occasionally goes with artists like Aphex Twin and The Pogues. Being Irish, I do find it cool in a sense as they're all great artists and it's nice to have them connected with here, even though they spent little or no time working in Ireland.

On the other hand, artists like those above (and U2...) overshadow most other Irish artists, which is disappointing. There's so many great, little known Irish artists out there, that are just as good as MBV and the others, yet most acts Ireland generally gets recognised for have barely spent anytime here, it's just disappointing in that sense I guess. Bands like Whipping Boy, ASIWYFA and The Fatima Mansions are just a few examples of fantastic Irish bands that get little international recognition.

The irony is that I know very little about Irish music, despite what my name and nationality might suggest. I am fixing that though.

That's perfectly understandable, I didn't really know much about Irish music until I was 18 or so and started going out to gigs in pubs and the like...

Hot Press have a top 250 Irish albums which is a good starting point (Despite a U2 dominance), I made it into a custom chart awhile back as it's really hard to find on the internet.
Hot Press: 250 Greatest Irish Albums, Part 1 (1-100) by Patman360
Hot Press: 250 Greatest Irish Albums, Part 2 (101-200) by Patman360
Hot Press: 250 Greatest Irish Albums, Part 3 (201-250) by Patman360

Most of these should be ok to find, there are some really awkward ones there though...

Great post from Patman.

@IrishMusichead, for what it's worth, it took me until maybe my mid '20s before I took major notice of the Irish scene. When I began to get a sense of all the great music I had overlooked / missed out on, I went a bit overboard, picking up some very obscure, long-forgotten albums on amazon for next to nothing and then finding a lot of them to be pretty excellent. My chart currently reflects that with it being around 25% Irish but I think I would ideally like to have it at about 15 or 20% (I just discovered BEA by complete chance one evening so had no idea I was listening to 'too much' Irish music ๐Ÿ˜ ).

For anyone who might be interested (and if albummaster / the mods are okay with me sharing the link) I started a youtube channel a while back where I post some of the standout tracks from these albums (just 'album tracks'; I don't include anything that was put out as a single) :

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFgKDVamLLNsPJ5B8GzhKhA/videos

Hopefully folks might wanna check some of them out.
