To be honest I love that they don't give a fuck what their fans think of the direction they go in.

and so bands that go in a different direction than what their fans are used to but go in an experimental direction are doing it purely for artistic reasons right? Pretty sure Coldplay collectively have more than enough money for 90 lifetimes. As fun as it is to be cynical about this band, logic would say your equation is untrue.

You say this as if you believe that this matters to pretty much anyone who has that amount of money....

They're not Donald Trump they're a band that happen to have become really successful from a small beginning. I honestly don't care when money is a primary motivator for an artist but I think it's easy to make an assumption with a mega successful band who make relatively "safe" music when you don't really know and interviews with the band and albums like Viva La Vida would say otherwise.

I mean, I like it well enough. It's fine, enjoyable. Of course, I also don't hate Avicii.

I'm probably too easy to please. But whatever, makes my life more enjoyable.

In connection with Jhereko's post, Muse were criticised for the "dubstep" direction they took. Supporters of Muse said that they were a British institution and could do what they wanted. People would follow in suit.

Coldplay's direction is the same in that respect.

Coldplay has always seemed to me a band whose musical direction and rise in fame has been driven by what's most popular at a given moment. So, at the height of EDM, they decide to work with Avicii.

As an artist, you usually strive to have a unique voice. Coldplay just always seems to be copying someone else's creative vision. This is generally something record labels do to make money.

This is no more EDM than any other piano driven dance pop record of the past 30 odd years. Sounds just like The Beloved to my bitter and twisted old ears.

I'm not a fan of EDM, nor am I really a fan of Coldplay, but I did like that Midnight song... the one that sounded kinda like a electronic Bon Iver tune.
