No Jacket Required by Phil Collins

My Charts

1985 #20

Interesting man, Phil Collins. In the mid 80's, he could do no wrong. Genesis was a machine, and his solo work flew off the shelves. This strange balding middle aged looking guy was a huge star in the MTV era. Why? He had a good voice, but he also had some songs. Nothing on this album has the power of "In The Air Tonight" or "I Don't Care Anymore", but if you can get past songs like "Sussudio" and "Take Me Home", this is actually a pretty decent record.

I think quite the reverse. "Sussudio" is the only acceptable track from this bomb. That and his awful cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" are actually his moments of glory. Some songs you just can't ruin totally, it appears.

Haha...I see his mini Motown obsession (the two tracks you listed above) as being his worst moments. "Sussudio" is almost seizure inducing to me, and "You Can't Hurry Love" is just completely safe...he adds nothing at all to the song. I'm not saying that No Jacket Required is a masterpiece by any means...I think it's inferior to a lot of what he did. But it's not terrible, and it does have its moments.

Funny how people see the same songs completely differently!

So, this guy brought a record player to the office, and we've been sharing our vinyl collections. Yesterday he played the following:

Bella Donna by Stevie Nicks

When the record got to "Leather and Lace", it was so beautiful I nearly wept.

Bella Donna is a beautiful album. It deserves a whole lot more love than it gets. Her best work outside of Silver Spring.

Junta by Phish

This is my album of the day. Great jam band jazz rock free flowing improvisation music. Great melodies, funny songs/lyrics, excellent music-playing ability. ๐Ÿ˜„
