He changed his name to a symbol on the basis that Warner owned the rights to the name "Prince", which was actually his birth name. They repeatedly refused to release the music he wanted to release (The Black Album being a prime example), would force him to do promo he was uncomfortable with, and even attempted to release albums of material that he wasn't satisfied with. Now, given how much he'd done for the label (in terms of record sales), it's easy to see why he got so pissed off with them. And then, when he tried to end his long-running relationship with them, they told him that he couldn't even use his own name on the basis that they owned it. And so, as a protest, he changed his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol to piss them off. Sure, Prince is fucking crazy, but this idea that he decided to change his name to a squiggle, on a whim, for shits and giggles, is a myth.
Just one thing puzzles me. Why did he handle the public relations fiasco regarding his name change so poorly? I guess that's the part where he's "fucking crazy" or felt above it. I'm sure you have some insight on this, Skinny. As someone who is really intrigued by marketing, I'm puzzled how Prince let this story spin into the myth it became. Thanks!
