Sounds dope so far. I largely enjoyed The Hunter and Crack The Skye, but had issues with both (the former being a bit too poppy, the latter being far too proggy), but this sounds right up my alley, even if those are the two Mastodon albums that this brings to mind first. That said, it has a murkiness that The Hunter lacked in places (all too often The Hunter just trod QOTSA territory), and I don't hear any of the fucking ridiculously convoluted shit that annoyed me at times during Crack The Skye. This is relatively compact. I like it a lot. I'm only about halfway through though, so there's still plenty of time for them to go and ruin it. Not sure it's hitting the heights of Blood Mountain or Leviathan, but I'll reserve judgement of course. Anyway, it's good to hear Mastodon on form.
I didn't like this one too much but it's pretty much a more concise and better constructed The Hunter. I didn't dislike the record but I always kept coming back to nostalgic feelings of when Mastodon wrote interesting sludge metal instead of pretty okay stoner rock. I miss that about them, but perhaps I need to get my head out of the sand and actually appreciate the band for what they are now even if that's easier said than done.

I thought the record had some really strong moments, particularly 'High Road' and that three-song run of 'Feast Your Eyes', 'Aunt Lisa' and 'Ember City', but that it fell flat too often. It's definitely a step up from The Hunter, and I can see myself returning to it more often than Crack The Skye too. I think I'm with you in not necessarily being a big fan of the shift to a more stoner rock sound, but when they're good they're great. I thoroughly enjoyed most of the record anyway. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

Yeah I feel itโs a good record I just donโt think it resonates with meโmaybe due to that nostalgia or maybe to this feeling that I think their โstoner rockโ phase is blatant insecure commercialism as they try to reach out to scenes like the ones that Queens of the Stone Age, Wolfmother, and The Sword have banked on for an entire decade. Maybe thatโs the cynic in me though, but I do feel they havenโt created something since Leviathan that Iโve adoredโthough I was personally okay with Crack the Skye despite my self-centered view of sludge most of the time (it should be loud! It should be sloppy! It should be pissed off! Get this post-rock/atmospheric/pseudo-intelligent artistry out of the genre!), lol.
