Oh fuck this matchup. Glad Gibson is already off the ground a bit without my contribution. Here's some info on his playing from the liner notes to Beat You Doing It:

Quote:
Probably the most striking aspect of Gibson's guitar playing was not his chordal work or his penchant for guitar breaks, which is a departure from convention, but his unique right hand technique. He picked upper underlying bass patterns. Whereas the thumb-work of many blues guitarists is confined to the three lowest strings of the guitar, Gibson's thumb ranges to the third (G) string, and perhaps even to the treble strings.

His playing is extremely diverse, from the Spanish tuning on "Tired of Being Mistreated"

to the incredibly unique guitar passages in "Blues Without a Dime"

and the juxtaposition of precise, light picking to heavier rhythm notes in "Levee Camp" (which i unfortunately cannot find on YouTube but which warrants your attention if you can track down a way to hear it)

I'm sure Clifford Gibson is an important figure in the field of American blues music and from what I've heard of him so far, he has a unique style of playing and crafting melodies. Probably the prettiest blues I've ever heard. But, I have to support my nom here and tell you guys why Ronald Jones is the shit. Transmissions From The Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic would be completely different albums without Ronald Jones' trademark fuzzy tones and eccentric psychedelic leads, while still having a clean sound present and also retaining that catchy pop appeal. I doubt that songs like She Don't Use Jelly would've had the same recognition if it weren't for that infectious riff. Ronald Jones is just one of the best, in my opinion.

Clifford Gibson was a great find. I love the Lips, but I'm not sad about this outcome at all. Someone (possibly me) should really add a Gibson comp to the database.
