This was pretty good (on first listen that is since I've only listened to it just now I believe). Very nice acoustic- esque stuff with great harmonies. Might listen to it again sometime. The rhythm section also stuck as particularly pleasing. Very cave like I'd say which is always pleasant.

Sorry for being late with this one. I enjoyed it well enough. Zemfira's mildly formulaic pop/rock sensibilities become a little monotonous, thankfully lifted by some interesting instrumentation, unfortunately said instrumentation starts to feel more like superfluous flourishes rather than some necessary integral part of the song's structure. More of an afterthought. Perhaps a little too anthemic for my tastes. I enjoyed the keyboard work, which was solid throughout, both the doors-esque acid keyboard early on and the more traditional piano trills later on (I would've been very happy if half of those guitar riffs were replaced by such keyboard work).. idk something about this album feels really artificial; the symphonic/guitar solo breaks in between each verse of "Хочешь?" was truly grating. That said, drop that track and a few tracks a little too similarity structured for comfort, and this would be a pleasant EP. Inconsistent but with some notable highlights. Might give it another listen at some point.
Anyway, looks like I get to throw another album at Rocky. Hm, you might enjoy this

Mini-Review: Mike Ladd's experimental hip hop release Negrophilia is one of those albums that could seemingly be praised for all the same things for which it could be hated. This is one of the pieces to come from a stellar lineage of afrocentric works (from Sun Ra to OutKast) or it's one of those preachy fucking hip hop albums that never bangs right. Negrophilia is an adventurous, varied album or a scattered mess with no clear direction. Though I err on the side of positivity on this record, I do see where it could be pretty hard to get into, and it's probably the lack of a good hooking factor that's making me unsure of how I feel. Melvin van Peebles gave me a similar run for my money with Br'er Soul, so perhaps more listening is the solution, and I'll consider that. At present though, this does feel like an album with a few too many good ideas but with no great ideas to tie them all together. It frequently comes across as a self-conscious Abstract Art Hip Hop Piece instead of finding that wonderful place where the tension of fun and seriousness is held in equal measure to sometimes shocking results, as on OutKast's best works, Madvillainy, hell even Freestyle Fellowship, who certainly aren't going for anything less than a pretty radical political statement on Innercity Griots that shouldn't have much room for fun.
Wow, that's probably the best Orphaned Land album I've heard. The guitar work in it was just about perfect and the rest of the instrumentation was awesome too. It was all over the place stylistically, which I've come to expect from them, and it's one of the things that makes their music so interesting, especially their inclusion of Arabic scales and things like that. Ranges anywhere from soft and beautiful to loud and powerful. Great album, thanks DBZ.
Great review Satie. Definitely some interesting perspective on the album; I appreciate the parallels drawn between in and Outkast and Intercity Griots (etc.), comparisons I've never really thought of myself but make a lot of sense as far as contextualizing the balancing of the "tension of fun and seriousness".
And glad you enjoyed the album Rocky. Yeah I definitely thought it would be your thing; seems I was right 😄
Oh and Dingerbell I will get to The Wicker Man soon. It's a film I enjoy but a soundtrack to which I've never bothered to listen. Thanks

sometimes I'll listen to a soundtrack from a movie I really enjoy and be horribly disappointed by how the music simply does not work out of context, and it becomes a chore to get through the whole thing. This is not one of those times 😄Thanks Dingerbell!
