Yes, important to say that no album will ever be deleted due to a single piece of info being missing. I think the confusion may be to do with the 'cross' icon that appears at the top of each album page if an album not yet been moderated (which looks similar to a delete icon & probably needs to be changed).
Albums with a missing release date are being unlocked in small random batches (to save flooding the moderation system with 14,000 unmoderated items). These albums are not being flagged for deletion. Once a release date is populated (or if a release date cannot be found for a particular album), the album is unflagged again.
For me, I have always kept the full release date (month/day/year) in my records. I have a spreadsheet listing my entire collection, and this has always been part of it. BEA not having this info has always felt incomplete to me.
It's a maintenance project that is taking a bit of time... 14,695 albums worth.

I can't even imagine how many hours are being dumped into this project. What if the release date were removed from the system for albums before the current year? That way there would be no blank field displayed and perhaps the entries would feel more complete?
