Tournaments like this one are the perfect opportunity for that to happen...I thought that discovery of someone you may not be as familiar with was kind of the point.

I've tried to appreciate The Allman Bros. too, and I've never been particularly drawn to any of their music, though I do think Duane is a great guitarist.

*Edit: For the record, Duane Allman is my father's second favorite guitarist (behind Jimi), so I've heard plenty of their music. I'm just not a fan.

Kudos to Frogger for defending the (mostly) silent majority here. While Allman has the clear edge in virtuosity, I think Greenwood's inventive guitar arrangements are something special.

They are something special. They are just not Duane Allman special.

Oh well....

Greenwood is a lot better at writing music, which is the most important part. He can make simple yet beautiful music and he can properly make psychedelic music even if it is just 10-20 seconds in a song that goes perfectly with the rest of the song.

What he does on his Norwegian Wood soundtrack alone blows ramblin man away.

Allman is a great guitarist though

Again...DUANE ALLMAN DID NOT PLAY ON RAMBLIN' MAN. Confused

And nothing Greenwood has ever done has blown Duane Allman away. Except for the fact that he plays for a band that on BEA can do no wrong.

Elton John writes great music. Does that make him a better guitarist than Duane Allman?

If you really want to know how incredible Duane Allman actually is:

I'd rather listen to Greenwood's knack for guitar textures/layers and experimentation than Allman's near-mastery of southern rock licks (weird opinion but I prefer Henry Paul of Outlaws fame to his work).

For a wider scope of what he was capable of:

An Anthology by Duane Allman

An Anthology Volume II by Duane Allman

Contains examples of his greatest work with the Allman Brothers Band...but also his exceptional studio work for artists like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Herbie Mann, Clarence Carter, King Curtis, John Hammond, Boz Scaggs, Johnny Jenkins, Delaney & Bonnie, Otis Rush, Ronnie Hawkins, Arthur Conley, Lulu, and Sam Samudio, as well as his work on Layla, the nice "Mean Old World" with Eric Clapton, and a pair of solo tracks, including the burning "Going Down Slow".

And Henry Paul wasn't even the second best lead guitar player in The Outlaws.
