Outside of the rather flat Tonite Show EP from earlier this year, ESGN is probably my least favourite Gibbs release since before The Miseducation of... (barring the collection of great but ultimately unsatisfying snippets that is The Label's Tryin' to Kill Me), but in that time he's been ridiculously consistent - there isn't anybody in hip-hop that can boast a run as fantastic as Gibbs in that period of time time (The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs, Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, Str8 Killa, Cold Day in Hell, Baby Face Killa, and of course Pinata, all of which are top tier hip-hop releases). I've probably been a bit unfair on ESGN in that sense; it's an extremely solid album, albeit one that's overlong, disappointingly samey, and filled with far too many pedestrian guest appearances (by comparison, Baby Face Killa also housed too many guest appearances, but at least there Freddie had the wherewithal to invite seasoned pros or distinctive up-and-comers, as opposed to the pedestrian selection of friends and weed carriers we have here). But Gibbs is Gibbs, and there aren't too many rappers - if any at all - on his level right now. Thank fuck he didn't get shot last night. _________________ 2021 in full effect.
