I'll check into this, but one explanation might be that the file had a .jpeg extension but in reality might have been in a different file format.

Just recently I started having a difficult time uploading album art. I keep getting the following error message even though the album art is definitely larger than that. Despite multiple tries with different images, the same error message occurs. Thanks!

Some fields for this album are not yet populated (missing album artwork & release date).

Uploaded file size: 8,323 bytes (259x194px) (file dimensions too small - needs to be at least 300 pixels)

Basically, the image is too small - less than 300 pixels wide. To ensure the best quality artwork, the image needs to be at least 300 pixels wide and preferably more. This allows better quality artwork to be displayed with readable text and less pixelation when the image is displayed in bigger sizes. BEA displays the same image in different sizes across the site and uses different versions of the same image to do this.

I get this error message even when the image in question is the recommended 500 x 500 pixels (or larger). Again, this is a recent development. Something changed. Thanks.

If you could post an image here that you got a problem with, I'll investigate. The only change is validation to ensure a minimum size of 300 pixels for uploaded album art with the sole aim of improving the quality of the database and to reduce future housekeeping work replacing lower quality images.

I've been doing some housekeeping and over the past week have manually scanned through 60,000 album covers with the aim of improving the quality of the database. Generally, everything is in good health but I've identified about 6,000 images where there is heavy pixelation and distortion which is clearly visible when viewing the artwork at larger sizes (up to 500 pixels). I'm going to be manually replacing these images with better quality versions over the next few weeks as it will provide a better experience for anyone viewing the site. I'm currently part-way through this process (already replaced about 1,600 images).

The root cause of the bad quality images was that there was no validation to ensure a minimum image size & the low quality images were unable to be resized much bigger than the original version without a noticable loss of quality.

Thanks! That explains things. Too bad the listed sizes on google search are not accurate I guess. Thanks for the detailed explanation!
