I haven't heard a lot of triphop, so you don't have to go too obscure.

I don't listen to much myself but I am interested in this genre too; try the first two Antimatter albums (Saviour more "pop", Lights out more "ambient"+"prog"); and if you like it drop me a line and I'll tell you one or two similar albums from other bands I know. If on this search, by someone else, you enjoy listening to a good trip hop band, I'd appreciate if you drop me a line with the reccommendation.

Sneaker Pimps. Definitely try them. There's also Gorillaz, Cibo Matto's new album, and Kruder & Dorfmeister. If you want more trip hop acts, you should look up the RYM custom chart.

EDIT: For the thread, please try this album. http://discodigitale.bandcamp.com/album/computer-dreams
It's wonderful, almost as good as their other album "Electronic Passion." I think I might have another favorite band. Again, it's synth pop.

Past the Big Names, I think you should listen to this

Care In The Community by Monk & Canatella

and the aforementioned K&D Sessions.

The whole album is this effing good.

The tracks on YouTube sound really good. Used to buy a fair bit of this type of stuff at the time but just never came across them. And they are from Bristol!

I'll give you a safe option.

Got a long 12 hour flight into Paris tomorrow. Anyone got any personal favourite ambient albums?

This one is guitar fed into computer and then a crazy max/msp patch does all this pitch analysis stuff and then generates sine waves that are operating on a microtonal level, or something. I dunno it's really technical but it's basically really smooth digital type stuff but driven by a live physical performance, I find it to be really compelling stuff.

Playthroughs by Keith Fullerton Whitman

Edit: I had Global Communication - 76:14 on here too but then I remembered the 2nd half has a lot of beat driven stuff and isn't really ambient.

Was on a drone / ambient / mindless repetition kick a few months back, and leant on the following pretty heavily, some of which are old favourites and others more recent discoveries:

E2-E4 by Manuel Gรถttsching

stdio by snd

Erik Satie: Gnossiennes; Gymnopรฉdies; ...t De Leeuw

The Sinking Of The Titanic by Gavin Bryars

One Quarter Descent by The Fun Years

Stoner Rock by Bong

Airs by Loren Mazzacane Connors

Parallel Dimensions by Theo Parrish

Fixed::Context by Labradford

Lanterns by Deepchord

Ablation by Main

Virtually none of these are strictly ambient, but they all worked for me.

Also, here comes some prime 'stating the bleeding obvious'...

Selected Ambient Works Volume II by Aphex Twin

The Disintegration Loops by William Basinski

Ambient 1: Music For Airports by Brian Eno

Alina by Arvo Pรคrt

Untrue by Burial

EDIT: Oh yeah, and this is just amazing...

Hats by The Blue Nile

It's not ambient or anything, but I imagine it would be perfect for a flight.
