Yeah, I was hoping to see a bit more of Too Bright on these lists. In my top 3 at the moment.
It's surprising that it's not. I think some of it can be chalked up to when these albums were released. War on Drugs had more time to solidify its place on top of year end lists.
not to hark on War on Drugs but I think a lot of publications are putting it high because it's got a story thanks to Mark Kozelek. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

It certainly didn't hurt, but I'm pretty sure WoD would have made most of these lists anyways. WoD were a force to be reckoned with this year. I's the album of the year for all my NON-music-head friends by far. Sort of like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot back in 2002. Even though it's not my thing, it does what it's trying to do perfectly. Even a hard rock snob like myself has to give it grudging respect. Plus, my wife digs it which is always a big bonus since she generally prefers silence. It's definitely better Sunday morning, latte drinking music than Beck's Morning Phase. ๐
This is actually a pretty cool song list from CoS. I ignored that Against Me! album this year, but maybe it'll actually be worth a listen... I've been seeing it everywhere. _________________ Doubles & Conch
*Shrugs*. I liked Beck's album. About as much as his "classics". Not amazing, nothing groundbreaking, but I dunno. Mellows me out nicely. Heart is a Drum in particular.
Never Catch Me and Seasons seem to be the most frequently featured songs on these lists. With good reason I should add.

I'd probably take your wife's usual preference over Lost in the Dream. Aside from Benji, it was probably my worst listen of the year.
Even the title makes me gag. ๐

Yeah, I actually think it feels more like late afternoon cool-down music than a morning pick-me-up. It is a bit lacking in edge, though, so I can understand why this crowd (and Pitchfork) were underwhelmed.

Re-listening to Damien Jurado's latest record, it's hard to imagine that Beck's album tops all of these lists but Jurado's is nowhere to be found. Both albums have similar feels, but can't help but feel Jurado's is easily the stronger of the two.
Haha! I never thought about the title before. *gags* It's totally gag worthy. ๐คฃ
@SpaceTiger & Loveless: Don't get wrong. I like Beck's new album well enough. It "mellows me out nicely" too. I just don't understand how anyone would put it in their top ten though whereas I do understand the placement of WoD. It's the more "interesting" album as far as capturing the direction "indie rock" has taken. It's incredibly interesting that its obvious reference points - 80s Springsteen, dire Straits, 80s soft rock in general - were exactly what indie rock rebelled against in the 80s. Indie rock has come full circle. I MUCH prefer Ariel Pink's approach. But, in a way, Ariel Pink is the underground , more experimental & interesting WoD.

I guess that's interesting from the intellectual standpoint, but when I actually listen to it, I feel exactly the opposite.
When I listen to Morning Phase, I hear the tired meanderings of a man mellowed from the weathering of age; a man who's made peace with his sadness, even if he's still sad. Maybe he's not as interesting as in his angst-filled younger days, but I can relate. War on Drugs, on the other hand, sound like a bunch of guys who've never had any real problems and just enjoy making shallow-but-slightly-artsy indie rock.
