Except that even that Allmusic review you cited only gave the album 3 stars, which is about right if not a little generous. You have it at 4.5 stars. Is there really only 1/2 star difference between The Blue Album and Make Believe to you?

It was originally 4, but they changed it to 3 because of all the negative responses to it (because allmusic's are more general consensus's mixed with their own opinion).
Just because it's pop, and they used to be grungy, doesn't make it bad.
I think it's a brilliant pop album. I'm definitely not the only one that thinks that. e.g. IGN gave it a 9.3, not saying that means a lot, but I pretty much agree with their review and score. Rolling Stone gave it 4, which is generally the highest they give an album on original release.
But if you don't like it, I can't help that. Just like how I think Sgt. Pepper is a load of mediocre crap, whilst many call it the 'best ever'.

Well, at least we can agree on something.
