Very mixed feelings about this one. The instrumentation was tight but the songwriting struck me as going for this heartfelt aesthetic which sounded genuine but I felt was undermined by what was (to my ears) just not very engaging songwriting. This was hardly the dominate feeling I got, and there were some moments where I wanted to stop what I was doing to listen more closely, but as a whole I was kinda underwhelmed... sorry man. Thanks for the rec though![/url]
No worries, I'll keep throwing records around every once in a while and I'll probably get a better idea of people's tastes, ect. I'll listen to that record you posted asap. ๐
This was about as good as I expected, which is pretty damn good. Not quite sure what to say other than it was another really solid Deerhoof album (and I really don't know any really solid points of comparison for Deerhoof). I was a little surprised that they didn't carry the synth aesthetic of Breakup Songs a little further, but of course the album was characteristically chock full of weird instrumentation and rhythmic oddities and I dug it ๐
Well this certainly put me in a good mood. I liked how the opening track gradually unravels itself into a groovy percussive type of deal. Not sure if there's much to keep me coming back to it, even though I enjoyed it. Maybe it sat too much on the line between something to listen to attentively vs something to have on in the background.
Really glad you dug the album Scorpion. Yeah it's a favorite of mine. If you ever find the time I definitely recommend looking up some of the lyrics. The translations I found are shaky but it's still really lovely stuff
Wow this was really really good. One of the better pieces of twee I've heard in recent memory. Catchy as fuck and lyrically sharp. "Hearts and Crosses" was a brilliant way to totally change the tone of the whole album a slight shade darker while still keeping itself earnestly twee. Gonna be coming back to this for sure.
Jun Togawa is a treasure, but yeah Iโm quite familiar with Guernica. Though I would say this is quite on the level of Guernicaโs debut itโs still plenty fine with lots of interesting influences and sounds colliding in a 1980s art pop landscape. A lot of really great songs that is fairly consistent โ pretty essential for the 1980s as well as Japanese contemporary music too.
Really creative and solidly written pop album. Very immediately poppy but deceptively varied in its composition. I like how some tracks would have this borderline noise-pop thing going on at the base of the mix that would come closer to the forefront as the track progressed. It's the kind of album that is immediately accessible and enjoyable but has tons of replay value in accordance with all the shit that's going on in the background that doesn't distract from all the pop loveliness but still adds a lot of depth to what could already have been just your standard above average pop album (well, at least as far as my understanding of japanese pop music informs me.) In any case I dig it and thanks again for a solid rec Gowi ๐
