Love this one. What you call the post-rock formula I prefer to think of as "cinematic." This basically sounds like the score to a film. If you liked this, check out these instrumental albums, also from 2009:
I've always been a big fan of Allen Stone and if you don't know who he is, go listen to his self-titled album because it's fantastic. The man just exudes energy and has an incredible voice. He's also insanely good live, puts on a great show. This album isn't as good as his last one, but it's still solid. The band is good (as they always are) and Stone still has that cool energy to him, but this album just feels a little too polished. I think he goes for this raw, soul feel and this comes off as a little too produced. But he's very aware of that and even mentions it on the album, which is one of the things I've always loved about him, how genuine he is. I'll be honest, this isn't a whole lot more than guitar porn, which I'm totally cool with. Gus G plays on it and he is quite the guitarist, and if you've ever wondered how good he is, this isn't a bad place to start. As for the rest of the aspects to the album, it's fine, nothing particularly special, just kind of your run of the mill power metal album, albeit with some incredible guitar playing. _________________ Progressive Rock
Growing up, my parents listened this radio station, 100.3 WBIG-FM. Right now, they just play AOR, dadrocker stuff, but at the time in the 90s, they played almost exclusively Motown, soul, and 60s pop. It was all Temptations, Supremes, stuff like that. Sam Cooke was in heavy rotation too, and growing up, I grew to love Motown and soul, and especially Sam Cooke, and part of that was probably because my dad loved Sam Cooke and played him a lot, so I've always had a really special connection with him. This might be the best thing I've heard from him, I mean, he's got some killer singles obviously, but this album, there's just something real about this album. This feels like Cooke doing what he wants to do, this isn't him reaching the top of the charts or anything, this is just him doing some good old soul music with a couple guys in a studio, nothing more. It feels genuine, it feels real, it has that rawness that good soul music needs, it just sounds like they all sat down in a studio and pumped it out in a day or two, it feels natural. This also really features Cooke's incredible voice, there isn't a 60-piece orchestra swelling behind him overpowering him, it's just Cooke and that voice, it's one of the most beautiful voices in all of music. This is an album that's all about enveloping you and drowning you in itself. It doesn't do that through layers and layers of sound, but rather through the quiet, serene nature of the music it has. Haley Fohr's voice is this low baritone-like thing that feels so warm and thick, and combined with the music that she adds, this album will transport you somewhere. It's a slow burn, but it'll wrap itself around you and it won't let go. It's an album that requires you to stop and listen, it's not going to wow you from the start, but it needs your attention, and it's worth giving. I feel like dbz, Skinny, Norman, mecca, Gowi, just about everybody would like this. _________________ Progressive Rock
Now THAT is a power metal album. A perfect blend of power metal, prog metal and folk music that creates an exceptionally unique and powerful album. The vocalist has this Ronnie James Dio on steroids voice and the guitars are just incredible, the tone, the use of the whammy bar, it's all excellently crafted, it's not mindless shredding, it all has a purpose, and that purpose is to blow your brains out. It's everything I could want a power metal album to be and then more. It's glorious. _________________ Progressive Rock
Man, this is just a little bit of everything. I guess primarily it'd be post-rock, but it's certainly an interesting take on it. A little bit of electronic/ambient, a little bit of krautrock, some psychedelia, tossed together with a trumpet, it's different and that makes it really unique. The whole album feels kind of uneasy and dark until the end which gets huge and powerful, it almost feels like redemption, like the light at the end of the long tunnel that you've been waiting for.
