FFS by FFS

Not sure how I feel about this quite yet, but the idea of Franz Ferdinand teaming up with Sparks was intriguing. Haven't really liked anything Franz Ferdinand has done since their debut (which I didn't totally love), but Sparks are always interesting. This is definitely my favorite thing FF has been involved in. Pretty fun.

I See You. Your Eyes Are Red. by Friend Roulette

And everyone should check out this wonderful bit of psychedelic chamber pop.

Infinity Machines by Gnod

So here's something that came out on 4/20, but I'm still trying to figure out. I've got it on my charts now somewhere in the middle, but I still really don't know how I feel about it. It's 2 cd's of weird spaced out electronic-rock and there's horns and it's kinda got a dark mood to it but it's never overwhelming about the noise. I dunno, it's just a weird one and I'm still figuring it out, which is so much harder when they're long. But I think a lot of you guys would enjoy checkin this one out.

Brother I Prove You Wrong by Charles Cohen

Really nice Buchla driven electronic music. I love the trend of Buchla modular synths getting so popular, there's just these certain plonks that sound amazing coming out of them. This one sort of alternates between these rhythmically consistent pieces, and stuff that goes a bit more freeform ambient type of stuff. Some very great stuff on here, if you like the electronics check this one out for sure. here's a sample track, if you like the sound of that then get on this.

New album from Helm, being put out by the always great PAN records next week, is streaming on spin now. or rather they have a soundcloud embed of it.

it is sounding really good, people who like the weirder electronic music should check it. Older Helm stuff kind of sounded doomy and gloomy to me but this is feeling pretty bright.

The Most Lamentable Tragedy by Titus Andronicus

this is absolute horse shit

EDIT: Okay I'll elaborate. The Monitor took some time to grow on me, but I eventually got into it and the debut album from these guys and even convinced myself for a time that they were going to be A Big Thing (critical reception among wider music media and my Internet circles also sort of indicated this). The music was bombastic, borderline (okay, past the border...) pretentious, but had this energy to it that made it where, at least to me, it didn't all fall apart. Local Business came along and completely abandoned the fun quick punk of the debut and the conceptual pretenses of the sophomore effort and also seemingly relinquished everything good about the band in one go (I came to this conclusion about four listens in, 'cause remember that this was a band that I really started to have an affection for after trying about as many times at The Monitor). It was overlong for what it really was and seemed to lack a lot of the character of the band, so expectations for this, their fourth album, were low, but I was inspired by the concept again being at the center and anticipated some kind of overarching narrative that would be executed in the way only high-minded rock Artistes can do - a million miles a minute. It didn't hurt that "Dimed Out" went the fuck in and inspired some nostalgia for taking my first whiskey shots to the songs on The Monitor of which it's an unapologetic carbon copy. Unfortunately, Patrick Stickles has substituted constant yelling (not screaming, but raspy, larynx-exploding yelling) for whatever his singing was before, there is little variety in the music, and the whole thing is so fucking obnoxious and straight for the jugular as to make the 93 minute (!!!) running time appear a shocking, cruel choice. I will listen again tomorrow to confirm, but one (partial I admit, because I had to just stop) listen really turned me off. Might be the worst album of the year that I've taken seriously and anticipated having at least a lukewarm response to.

Primordial Forms by Nick Fortรฉ

Hey anyone who likes semi longform weird synthesis that sorta hints at beats but really just goes all over the place, here's something you should check. This guy was affiliated with the Schematic Records crew in the 2000's idm boom, that was the label that was all really computery and autechreish. But Forte's stuff always had this really weird personality to it, the timbres would get into extreme digital stuff but the rhythms just felt a bit looser, and there was always a sense of fun to the adventurousness. That is carried over and expanded upon on this new release, the latest in Amish Record's Required Wreckers series, which I'm not super familiar with but they did a Keith Fullerton Whitman / Ben Vida split that was really amazing. But this release really takes the wild structuring up a notch, just some total brain melting synth work. Highly recommended.
