I'd add Ritchie Blackmore as the archetypal and original neoclassical shredder...Made in Japan is kind of the highlight of his playing.

Hendrix's Electric Ladyland has got to be the *official* "best guitar album ever."

I used to not be a Clapton fan, but "Bluesbreakers" and "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" convinced me otherwise. Also Duanne Allman in "At Fillmore East."

I don't know too many guitarist solo albums, and the ones I do ("Surfing with the Alien" by Satriani and "Passion and the Warfare" by Steve Vai) aren't very good.

Couple of the more obvious (read: safe) guitarists not mentioned on this thread yet...

While I was thinking this up Blackmore, Clapton and Allman were mentioned... Alas I'll leave it as it is, with Randy Rhoads, my #1 metal guitarist thrown in as well.
