You are missing my personal list of perfect female voices:

1. Alison Krauss. This is her cover of a great Waylon Jennings song. This one is extra awesome because the second and third chorus feature harmonies from the amazing Dolly Parton (already on your list).

My favorite work of hers is below, but it's bluegrass, which may not be your thing. She also has some solo albums and a cool collaboration with Robert Plant.

So Long So Wrong by Alison Krauss And Union Station

2. Harriet Wheeler, of The Sundays. This is their cover of the Stones' Wild Horses.

I think their best album is their debut:

Reading, Writing & Arithmetic by The Sundays

3. Neko Case. This is a live version of one her best songs.

My favorite album of hers is this one:

Fox Confessor Brings The Flood by Neko Case

Am I missing Chris Cornell? I mean I guess if screaming isn't your cup of tea it makes sense to leave him off the list, but he has one of the greatest vocal ranges in the history of rock music.

Aaaand you can disregard that, just spotted Superunknown. I'd have it much higher but who's to bother quibbling with rankings. Pretty great chart overall.

I'm not gonna give this too much though because what's the point, but here's a quick list of god like vocalists from off the top of my head:

Neko Case
Everly Brothers
Gregory Isaacs
Gene Clark
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
Bjork
Julia Holter
Tom Waits
Gillian Welch
Louvin Brothers
Dennis Brown
Jorge Ben
The Congos
Max Romeo
Nico
James Brown
Same Cooke
Billie Holiday

and so on.

You may already be familiar mecca, but I think you'd really dig Hugh Mundell's Africa Must Be Free By 1983, based on your taste in reggae. It's a classic, and definitely shares a lot in common with the reggae artists you mentioned above. Produced by the genius that is Augustus Pablo, who also released a pretty stellar dub version.

Thanks Skinny. Yeah, It's a great record. Have it in my pocket for the BYT tournament.

I was surprised how few straight rock vocalists jumped into my head when I did this, but it looks like your list is similarly leaning (great picks, btw). I think I'm a biased towards folk, country, jazz, and soul for this topic because the voice tends to be more of a centerpiece in those genres.

Yeah, i guess it all depends on what we mean by great. Like David Yow from Jesus Lizard is pretty great in an unconventional sense, and the girls from Cocorosie are weird and have pretty wide ranges but didn't feel right in this company. Alex Chilton is one that may deserve to be on the list though.

Hey! Have you ever heard Alison sing this Waylon song before? ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„

God bless you and her always!!! ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„

Holly (a fan of Alison since 1994)

P.S. Her rendition of this song is from the first Waylon tribute album that was done after we lost him.
