2015 really has been an amazing year for music. Listening to this new Tame Impala now and am really enjoying it. After this I'll give the new Wilco project a listen.
New surprise Ninja Sex Party dropped too. I like my music a little more civilized than Wilco *straightens tie*
Iron and Wine released a covers album featuring the guy from Avett Brothers Band of Horses (paging Rocky and Gowi there). It's alright, some interesting takes on songs.
So BEP hasn't been interesting to me since "Gone Going" which I hate to admit I still really enjoy. Dirty Bit has some interesting riffs that I used in early mashups but the song as a whole was pretty banal, and for the most part they just haven't interested me. Their really early stuff is interesting, more traditional hip hop (Will.I.Am was apparently a ghost writer for Easy-E) but nothing hugely standout.
A few months ago they had a song come out called "Awesome". It was anything but. Seriously one of the most repetitive and annoying songs I've heard by any man (since Boom Boom Pow at least).
Today I saw a reddit post about Black Eyed Peas going back to their roots. I assumed they meant stuff like "Monkey Bussiness"'s singles, which my mom really liked, so I was gonna check it out and maybe show her. I gotta say, this is one of my favorite songs I've heard of theirs. It's mostly because they just rip off other famous songs, but that's sort of the point I guess. It's a little too long, but it's actually good, which was a shock.
Taboo has never seemed more out of place, but apl.de.ap actually shows that he's got some talent, and there's no fergie, so that's an automatic upgrade.
This was a "20th Anniversary" song, and it's unclear if there's an album coming, but I'd take a full on hip-hop, Fergieless Black Eyed Peas. _________________
I saw these guys live last year and they were a lot of fun, now they're doing really well in the UK charts. It's some no-fuss, no-pretence anthemic synth pop with some hella catchy choruses. You could easily dismiss it as being too simple or generic, but I think it's solid for what it is. Glad Pitchfork gave them a decent score on this one after other outlets have been a little too lukewarm about it.
Not sure whom I got this rec from, Patman possibly. Anyway, very good DIY power-pop (reminiscent of Pavement sometimes), 3 chords per song tops, but all on point. Nothing new or earth-shattering, but a youthful, seemingly naive record that got me quite enthusiastic, and, yes, took me back.
