But that doesn't fit in with the John Cage definition I mentioned (or Jon Winsor's, which adds "biological rhythm" to the mix). It's not that telling a narrative necessarily makes a piece of music less musical (or "good"), but from a structuralist perspective, you can't put the narrative by itself and have it still be music. The converse, however, is more than doable: You can separate Puccini's Madame Butterfly from its narrative, and it'd still be music (even though it may not be quite as powerful).

Very true. But this doesn't mean that a great amount of music was created for the purpose of storytelling, and therefore the lyrics were deemed more important by the artists than the backing instrumentals. This discussion isn't really a question of whether or not lyrics are music on their own. It's really just about what people focus on. And even musicians mix their approach between focusing more on the lyrics or more on the music.

To me, the lyrics are the most important because lyrics are the actual message that is being shared with the world, no matter who it is that is making the delivery.

I dunno, Holly. I think instrumental albums like

Ballet Mรฉcanique by George Antheil
or

Olivier Messiaen: Quatuor Pour La Fin D... Barenboim
or

Fare Forward Voyagers (Soldier's Choice) by John Fahey
or

Third Ear Band by Third Ear Band
or even

Hรฅpster Selection I by Warm Surplus
can deliver messages just as deep and specific as those with lyrics. Music is a language all its own, with its own sort of semiotic grammar we can naturally use to understand what the performer is trying to say.

Then why not just go read a book?

^^^ Because the way that the message is delivered is important too, but still to me, at the end of the day, the message is what is most important because it is what is being said at all. ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„

But in that case, at the end of the day you're not really talking about music at all, you're just talking about words. ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„

Well that's really not true. I think it's safe to say it's not just about the words but the way in which they're presented. When Nina Simone sings, all of those words are presented in such a powerfully emotional way that they mean more.

Isn't that still the music though, and not technically the lyrics themselves? Take The Great Gig In The Sky for example, nothing is said, but emotions are still conveyed.

The two cannot be separated. If the lyrics are utter shit then a good voice cannot save them.
