i just think it all sounds the same and i don't GAF lyrics so there's not much to be impressed by here. i can see if people thought Born to Die was a bit forward, but i thought Ultraviolence struck a good middle ground - it was emotive, atmospheric, but also delivered hooks and, you know, pop music. this just isn't particularly good atmospheric music. she's good at making good pop music.

I'm with you till that last sentence. I really like this release as atmospheric music. The brooding pop of Ultraviolence was great for what it was, but not something to kick my feet up to. "I don't GAF lyrics" is spot on -- that plus echoey, winding melodies gives exactly the mood portrayed on the cover. It's strange to me that so many people experience this album as gloomy.
i didn't experience it as gloomy, ftr. i just experienced it as dull. i get that it's windy and languishing and i get why people would like it, but it goes on far too long with far too little variation on a theme that is at the onset not as interesting to me. Born to Die and Ultraviolence to a lesser extent took musical (and lyrical, at times) themes that I didn't care about at all and made me care about them with an immediacy, grace, and variability that were all fairly spectacular for what LDR is usually sold as on the Internet (manufactured, shallow, etc.). i don't think I'd even call Honeymoon a bad album, just a departure that's not for me.

That's cool. It sounds like we more or less agree about her earlier stuff -- I never really got why so many people were antagonistic (or vocally ambivalent) towards her.

I'd say it has far less to do with her actual music than her sudden rise to fame, looks, etc. Pretty much everything written about her early on focused on the way she looked, including whether or not she had plastic surgery in her transition to her then new name/style. It's something that seems to happen only with women. There's also just the natural huge hype = big backlash.
I think she's much more talented than haters will give her credit for, but I also felt Honeymoon was rather dull in comparison to previous records, especially Born to Die. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Her music is OK, but I lost a lot of respect for her after the whole "I wish I was already dead because Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse died young and aren't they cool" thing. Also my only experience hearing her live at all was on SNL, and I have no idea if she's sometimes better than that but she was so bad I really questioned if she had any talent or if it was all just studio edited. Those are my general issues. _________________
Not sure what it is, but I find that I’m pretty much over Silversun Pickups or at least that’s what this record tells me. It lacks anything satisfying about the atmospheric layering, hooks, melodies, progressions… really everything feels so utterly bland and uninspired. I mean I still listen to their first two records and still get a lot out of them, so I don’t know what’s going on where I can’t really vibe with their new releases. They just feel so empty.

those aren't really reasons to dislike the music, though...

I'm a little meh on the album right now too but it took a while for Neck of the Woods to grow on me and I did eventually come to like it. I'll give it more time.

Oh for sure, like I said the music itself is ok (haven't heard the new album), but if I seem to not like her, those are the reasons why. _________________
